During the past, the Danakil has repeatedly been flooded by the Red Sea and each time, the water has evaporated, leaving a huge deposit of salt. In places, the salt is more than 5 km thick! The crust of the lake is broken into poligonal plates and salt is oozing out from the gaps. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
