A number of shallow quakes including several of magnitude >3 have been registered since Friday (7 Sep) beneath the Apoyeque volcano complex in Nicaragua. Most quakes are located around the maar Laguna Xiloá, one of the volcano's active vents.
Apoyeque volcano is located only 10 km northwest of the capital Managua which would be directly threatened by a new eruption. INETER and the government issued a green advisory alert.
Local volcanologists are planning to travel to the volcano to investigate the earthquakes causes.
It is possible that the quakes are related to the magitude-7.6 earthquake that hit neighboring Costa Rica on Wednesday.
