Gunung Besar is a 1899-m-high volcano in SE Sumatra with a minor sulfur deposit in its crater.

Background:

A major solfatara field, Marga Bayur, is located along its north and NW flanks along the Semangko fault system. A minor phreatic eruption occurred in 1940 from Gemurah Ilahan, one of four solfatara fields of the Marga Bayur field.
