Background:Corvo and its neighbor to the south, Flores, are the only two Azorean volcanoes located west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. A 2-km-wide caldera centered on the north side of the island is the most prominent feature of Corvo. The caldera floor contains several small cinder cones and two shallow lakes. Two southward-breached pyroclastic cones erupted along a N-S-trending fissure and fed lava flows that formed a platform that underlies the village of Corvo at the southern end of the island. The youngest eruption on Corvo produced a fissure-fed lava flow that reached the sea near Punta Negra.------------------------- Source: Smithsonian GVP Corvo Photos:
