Volcanic activity world-wide 1 Aug 2012: rising tremor at Etna, continuing unrest at Tongariro, updates for Santiaguito, Popocatéptel, Nevado del Ruiz, Tungurahua, Sakurajima, Taal, Batu Tara

Etna (Italy): The strombolian activity in Bocca Nuova continues and the intracrater cone slowly grows. At the moment, the tremor is slowly rising, suggesting an increase in activity.

Activity at Stromboli (Eolian Islands) is at normal levels, with frequent (once every few minutes), but not exceptionally large explosions from several of the summit vents.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) is strongly degassing and shows periods of elevated tremor which might be indicating ash venting. A series of volcanic quakes is visible as well. INGEOMINAS keeps is kept at alert level orange, meaning that an eruption could be expected within days or weeks with little warning.
Nevado del Huila is degassing and seismically active, at low levels. The Popayan observatory registered 83 seismic events between 25-31 July.

In Guatemala, volcanic activity has no significant changes to previous days. Fuego has ongoing strombolian activity and a lava flow, while Santiaguito produces ash explosions, blocky lava flows and small pyroclastic flows from its growing dome.

Popocatépetl in Mexico continues its decreasing trend of activity. Only 14 weak emissons of mostly steam were recorded on 31 July during 24 hours, and there appears to be no significant seismic activity. Glow is still visible from the summit, but less than before.

Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador Tungurahua has moderate seismic activity with a weak tremor signal. A small emission was registered at 01:59 local time yesterday. Mostly the volcano is covered in clouds.

On the other side of the Pacific, most of the volcanoes in the Philippines are currently quiet, the Eruptions Blog pointed out:

Mayon volcano has little to no seismicity, SO2 emissions below 100 tonnes/day and no deformation measured since February.

Taal volcano: The water of the caldera lake has becoming cooler and less acidic and GPS measurements have been showing deflation since August of 2011. This suggests that the unrest at Taal in 2011 was likely an intrusion that has since ceased. However, slight inflation is still present and there are elevated CO2 emissions, and PHILVOLCS maintains alert level 1.

Remote Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia) continues to produce ash clouds reaching about 2-3 km altitude regularly detected by VAAC Darwin on satellite images.

A few new explosions have occurred at Sakurajimavolcano in Japan, but smaller than some of the larger bursts in previous weeks. Reported ash cloud heights of the last eruptions were about 2 km.

The seismic swarm at Tongariro (New Zealand) continues judged on the recent seismic drum plot from GeoNet. Alert remains at 1 (out of 4).
