The VolcanoDiscovery presentation of the 4 Greek volcanoes at the German volcanological museum Lava-Dome in Mendig/Germany on Oktober 29th was successful. Tobias Schorr introduced the public to the unknown Greek volcanoes and their geological and cultural history. Milos as the beginning of the first industrial mining in Greek history was the start. He explained how the mining of obsidian was important for prehistoric people and how the tools were used and exported from Milos to other Greek islands. The Minoan eruption of Santorini´s volcano and its impact in prehistoric culture was one of the most interesting facts in his presentation. The public also loved his photos from Methana volcanic peninsula and his presentation of some rock samples after the show. The next presentation will take place in the VHS-Remagen/Germany on 25 November. [mehr]

Tobias Schorr came just back from a very nice private walking study tour on Methana. The weather allowed many interesting walks into the mountains of Methana. Old friends and the great landscape were the highlights. Tobias is still planning new tours on Methana for 2009. We will keep you updated. [mehr]

Wir suchen den Besitzer von 2 (vermutlich verlorenen) Speicherkarten mit ca. 650 Bildern einer Vulkantour am Stromboli und anderen Vulkanen. Die Aufnahmen stammen vom Zeitraum zwischen 26. Aug. und 3. Sep. 2008. Das erste Foto zeigt die Tür des Büros von Magmatrek auf Stromboli. ... [mehr]

Am 21 Juni 2008 wurde im wunderschönen Dorf Nikia auf der Insel Nisyros das neue Vulkanmuseum eingeweiht. Zahlreiche Besucher, sowie wichtige Politiker und religiöse Oberhäupter der Dodekanes nahmen an der festlichen Veranstaltung teil. Geplant und realisiert haben das Museum ein Team um die beiden griechischen Geologen Dr. Giorgis Voujoukalakis und Dr. Michalis Fytikas. Beide kämpfen seit vielen Jahren für den Schutz und das Marketing der aktiv geltenden Vulkane in Griechenland. Im Museum gibt es sehr ausführliche Erklärungen zum Vulkanismus allgemein und zur Vulkaninsel Nisyros. Zahlreiche Gesteinsproben, Mineralien und Fossilien machen das Geheimnis des Vulkanismus zugänglich. ... [mehr]
