Mount Fuji (Fuji-san, 富士山 in Japanese) is the highest volcano and highest peak in Japan and considered one of the 3 Holy Mountains (along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku). Fuji is a perfect, beautiful stratovolcano about 60 miles south-west of Tokyo, with an exceptionally symmetrical shape making it into famous symbol of Japan and an important element in Japanese art. It is a popular destination for excursions. More than 200,000 people climb to the top of the Mt Fuji every year. The last eruption of Mt Fuji was in 1707–08. Between 2000 and 2001, seismic activity under the volcano was at slightly elevated levels, rising concern about a possible reawakening of the volcano.
The volcano remains calm. However, an increased number of small quakes near and under Mt Fuji are visible on our latest data plot of nearby earthquakes (within 30 km radius). According to a the Japan Times, a new eruption of Mount Fuji could force some 567,000 people to evacuate their homes (in the worst case scenario). The Shizuoka Prefectural Government ha worked on a new evacuation plan, which assumes that more than 130,000 people from approx. 50,000 households would have to relocate if "lava" were to reach residential districts in the city of Fuji located just south of the 3,776-meter mountain. Laut eines Artikels der japanischen Nachrichtenagentur Kyodo sei der Druck in der Magmakammer unter dem Vulkan Mt Fuji nach dem Tsunami im März 2011 und einem Magnitude 6.4 Beben in der Nähe 4 Tage danach deutlich angestiegen und sei derzeit höher als beim letzten Ausbruch im Jahre 1707 vor rund 300 Jahren. Laut einem Bericht umfasst eine unklare Foto des Geländes, trat eine Reihe von neuen Kratern, die größten 50 m Durchmesser, auf der östlichen Flanke des Vulkans auf 2200 m Höhe. Dampf wurde beobachtet von diesen Öffnungen ausbrechen. Die Beobachtung schließt andere Zeichen, was auf eine allmähliche Erwachen: ein Schwarm von Erdbeben einschließlich 4 Größenordnung 5 nordöstlich des Fujisan und nach 28. Januar stattgefunden haben. Eine frühere 6.4 M Beben ereignete sich unter dem Vulkan am 15. März 2011.
