The Ivao group itself consists of 3 young cones that are less than 10,000 years old. Ivao cone at the NW end is the highest of the group and the highest peak on Urup Island. Lake Ivao has formed as a result of damming of a valley by the SE-most cone. Krutaya Mountain is the elongated central cone.
