Masaya volcano 25 km SE from Managua is one of Nicaragua's most active and usual volcanoes.
In contrast to most other volcanoes in subduction zones, it has been erupting mainly fluid basaltic lava. At the time of the Spanish Conquistadors, it contained an active lava lake and it is reported that there were attempts to extract the volcano's molten "gold."
Masaya is a complex consisting of a 6×11.5 km large caldera with steep, up to 300 m high walls, and a group of young cones at the NW end including Nindirí and Masaya volcano proper. There are multiple summit craters including the currently active Santiago crater, the site of the current activity.

Nicaragua's Masaya volcano, located about 20 km south of Managua city, has entered a new eruptive phase. The latest report of the Instituto Nicaragüense de Estudios Territoriales (INETER) mentions 24 small ash and steam explosions that were recorded between 30 April and 1 May. 9 of these explosions produced ash clouds that rose about 500 m above the Santiago crater rim. ...mehr
The activity followed an increase of elevated SO2 emissions and seismic activity detected in late April. According to reports, the degassing from a crack in the main crater was accompanied by jet-like sounds, and internal rumblings can be heard at the volcano. Latina Press mentions that scientists are closely monitoring the new activity, but so far, no emergency has been declared and the Masaya Volcano National Park remains open. [less]

"There is no incandescence currently as part of the wall near the vent collapsed into it. Local people are expecting an eruption to clear it. One can hear churning and avalanches and there is quite a bit of gas you bed to put the mask on or you can only stay 10-15 min on lookout. The dormant crater next door looks like has a small lava dome in it which is slowly rising. The trees and plants don't grow properly maybe because of CO2 in this crater?" [less]
Based on analysis of satellite imagery, the Washington VAAC reported that a diffuse steam plume from Masaya drifted WSW on 12 August and a gas plume was detected on 18 August. Both plumes possibly contained ash.
