A recently published study shows that Mt Merapi volcano near Yogyakarta has been inflating during the past 2 years, following its last and deadly eruption in 2010. According to the study, Merapi has entered a new cycle of inflation which is a typical precursor of a new lava dome-building eruption caused by rising magma within the conduit of the volcano. At the moment, there is no way to predict when exactly the next eruption will start, but given that it is one of the world's most active volcanoes, it might not be in a too long future.

Ein großer Lahar (Schlammlavine) trat am 21. März an der SW Flanke des Merapi Vulkan auf und strömte durch das Dorf Sleman an der SW Falnke des Merapi in ca. 20 km Entfernung. 21 Häuser nebst Fahrzeugen und Vieh wurden unter zementartigem Schlamm begraben. Mindestens 200 Einwohner wurden evakuiert.

A small pyroclastic flow occured at Merapi yesterday, reaching 1.8 km from the summit. Today, the explosive activity from the vents at the summit seems to have decreased further. The ash plume rises to about 1 km above the crater and appears to be much smaller in volume than yesterday. Yogyakarta airport is scheduled to reopen on 16 Nov, if the trend of decreasing activity continues.

Strong eruptions continue at Merapi volcano, Indonesia. Violent explosions are audible tens of kilometers away from the summit. Magma is still rising inside the volcano and even more powerful explosions could occur. Ash from the explosions and from pyroclastic flows is forming a large plume reaching 10-20 km altitude and extending now over 300 km to the west. The ash threatens to reach the airspace of Jakarta airport soon, which promted Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates and other airlines to suspend long-haul flights to Jakarta for the time being. ...
