The volcano's last eruption from the Kimanura fissure NE of the summit caldera seems to have ended by now. Until early to mid March, a lava lake was observed in the eastern vent and a strong heat source could be detected on satellite imagery, but has now disappeared.
Seismic explosion signals from a source under the summit were noted on 24 February from the summit crater and overflights showed increased degassing from the central pit, which contained a lava lake until 1940. This activity increased in April and a strong SO2 odor from this area suggests the presence of near-surface magma. Scientists and the park rangers are speculating about the possibility that a new lava lake in the summit crater might be about to form. [less]

During 11-15 April steam-and-gas emissions from Popocatépetl occasionally contained ash; emissions contained a substantial amount of ash on 12 April.
Seismicity increased on 13 April and at 2220 an explosion ejected incandescent blocks that landed on the NE flank as far as 500 m away from the crater rim. A larger explosion at 2236 ejected incandescent blocks that landed even further away on all flanks; an ash plume rose 2 km above the crater and drifted ENE. Ashfall was reported in San Pedro Benito Juarez (10-12 km SE), where the explosion was also heard. [less]

IG characterizes the actual activity level (visual and seismic activity) of Reventador "moderate". No major changes have been observed at the volcano in recent days. [less]

Mt Lamington volcano is an andesitic stratovolcano with a 560 m high summit lava dome that grew during 1951-56, following a brutal reawakening with a major explosive eruption in 1951, which produced lava flows and devastating pyroclastic flows, and killed about 3-4000 people. [less]

Meanwhile, lava flows on the coast persist and are less than 1.4km / 0.9mi from reaching the ocean, but don't seem to be in a hurry to get there. The flows are still quite active, but spreading out across the plain rather than focusing in one direction. They are still accessible and the hike (with proper access across private land) is getting shorter! At some point soon, there may be the chance to safely see an ocean entry, that is if nothing else changes in the meantime... stay tuned! [less]

A constant seismic tremor signal of high energy accompanied the generation of a steam and ash eruption column which reached a height of 5 km above the crater during a few minutes. The ash cloud drifted to the north and then to the north-west. No significant noises or roars were heard.
Ash fell in the areas of Baños de Agua Santa, Runtún and Juive. At the ​​Tungurahua Volcano Observatory, located 14 km north west of the volcano, only slight ash fall was recorded. [less]

Local authorities are preparing for potential evacuations. The last time evacuations were ordered on a large scale was in 2000 when over 50,000 people had to leave their homes.
The major hazards of a larger eruption would be ash falls, pyroclastic flows, lahars produced by mixing of water and tephra. [less]

Our expedition leader Andi visited the volcano and the observatory and confirms that seismic activity and degassing from the lake have decreased during the past 2-3 weeks. However, PVMBG ( the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia) still keeps the status at level 3 ("eruption warning") and the crater is off-limits to tourists. [less]

A new vent was detected, both on visible and thermal images, located next to the active dome on the SE flank (Ñuñurqu). The activity in this area has intensified since October, when the last aerial survey had taken place.
Extensive lava flows are descending on the SE flank of the dome and reaching the base of the cone. [less]

The crater geometry, nearly circular and 214 m in diameter, had not changed significantly since October 2011. Fumaroles were active at the E and W rim.
Thermal measurements indicated a maximum temperature of 171°C in the crater, 20°C more than in October 2011. A thermal anomaly was observed at the eastern outer rim of the crater. Near the rim of the inner crater, a 10-15 m large block with temperature of 147°C was observed, as well as other large blocks with temperatures of up to 173°C were found nearby. These blocks were probably ejected during the recent explosions. [less]

Starting at 07:10 local time on 9 April, a continuous tremor signal of high energy was detected and the volcano started to erupt a continous column of ash, which rose within few minutes to 2 km height and drifted to the south, and later increased to about 3 km height above the crater.

Several volcanoes have calmed down and been set back to lower alert levels. As usual, the new Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report has been issued today and is summarized as follows:

- Since the last week, there were seismic signals interpreted with rock fracturing, i.e. dike intrusions, located west of the active crater. Similar seismic activity was observed prior to the eruptions in November 1985 and September 1989, although this time it is less energetic. [less]

It is difficult to obtain reliable information about the lava lakes of Ambrym during cyclone season (November until March). Often, large clouds cover the island, which makes visual observations hard. Also, our local contacts rarely climb the volcano during cyclone season.

No more phreatic explosions and ash-venting episodes have been observed since 23 March. Seismic activity has returned to a low level as well and zone C on the island was reopened for day-time visits.
However, the volcano shows strong sulfur dioxide emission, suggesting that fresh magma might be flowing into a shallow reservoir. During 24-26 March, extremely high levels of SO2 emission rates were measured, up to 4,594 tonnes per day, the third highest value measured in 10 years. [less]

The climax of the eruption with tall lava fountains took place at around 3 am and was relatively short, as during the previous eruption. Lava flowed into the Valle del Bove and the southeastern sector of the Etna and the surroundings received ash fall.
It is interesting to note that interval since the previous eruption, 14 days, was exactly the same as the previous interval. This suggests that once again, a certain rhythm might have established itself, and if that is true, the next paroxysm should be expected around 15 April... [less]
