After the 3 powerful eruptive events on 12 July, seismic activity has decreased at Galeras volcano. The alert level was lowered to 2.

Galeras volcano had a strong explosive eruption on 12 July at 10h58 local time, producing an ash plume reaching 12 km altitude. The event was followed by two further explosions at 14h36 and 21h02 local time. 
Ash falls were reported in the localities of  La Florida, Ancuyá, Sandoná and Consacáes. Authorities started to evacuate about 10,000 people from the areas nearest to the volcano.
The eruption was preceded by a relatively calm period of lava dome growth interupted only by a weak explosion on 9 July accompanied by a minor swarm of earthquakes.
The events mark Galeras' typical trend of erupting and have been expected by scientists of the monitoring institute INGEOMINAS. A pdf report about the eruption can be downloaded from their website.

INGEOMINAS reported that during 15-22 May, a partially solidified lava dome remained in the main crater of Galeras. Seismicity and the sulfur-dioxide flux continued at very low levels. Galeras remained at Alert Level 2 (likely eruption in days or weeks).

Seismic and thermal activity at Galeras has decreased, but the volcano remains on elevated alert.

Galeras has been showing an increase in tremor since the morning of 28 March, as INGEOMINAS reports. The Alert Level was raised from 3 ("changes in the behavior of volcanic activity have been noted") to 2 ("likely eruption in days or weeks"). In addition to the tremor, seismic instruments detected very shallow low-energy hybrid signals, similar to ones recorded during 1991-1993 when dome emplacement occurred on the main crater's floor.

Increased seismicity continues at Galeras volcano, with an average of 200 small earthquakes occurring per day. In addition, slight deformation and an increase of sulphur dioxide emission (ca. 300 tons per day) are recorded at the volcano. Visible observation shows strong degassing at the active cone and around the lava dome. Galeras remained at Alert Level 3 ("changes in the behavior of volcanic activity have been noted").

The lava dome in the main crater of Galeras volcano continues to grow. Strong degassing is occurring in several areas of the active cone and around the dome. Galeras remains at Alert Level 3 (the second highest).

Galeras volcano started erupting on the morning of Thanksgiving Day (Thursday 24th of Nov. 2005) with a moderate (phreatic?) ash eruption that lasted 30 minutes and produced heavy ash falls on the city of Pasto, about 18 km (12 miles) away. There were no seismic precursors according to Colombia's Volcanology Institute.

Galeras volcano, 330 miles (ca. 500 km) southwest of Bogota, is emitting dense plumes of steam and producing characteristic volcanic tremors (so-called tornillos), making an impending eruption likely. 9000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes, many of them refusing to leave.

On 15 of Nov., Colombian  authorities on Tuesday began evacuating 7,500 people living on the slopes of a volcano in southwest Colombia over concerns it is about to erupt. Although the warning remains at Level 2, Roberto Torres, a geologist at Colombia's Geology and Mines Institute. said government officials ordered the evacuation as a precaution.

"Dozens of small earthquakes near a volcano in southwest Colombia were raising concerns Sunday of a possible eruption. More than 30 temblors have occurred within 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of the Galeras volcano beginning Saturday Aug. 20, geologist Roberto Torres said. Several had a magnitude near 5 and seven were strong enough to be felt by people."
Galeras volcano is an active "4270-m high andesitic stratovolcano in the southwestern Colombia near the border to Ecuador" whose activity in May 2005 prompted the Colombia government to evacuate the area.

Columbian authorities have ordered the evacuation of 9000 people living on the slopes of Galeras volcano near the border with Ecuador, after monitoring scientists warned of that the volcano might erupt again soon.
Galeras last had a minor eruption November 2004, wich caused little effect on the surrounding populations. In 1993, a small eruption inside the crater had made Galera infamous, because it killed 10 scientists who had climbed up to its crater and were surprised by the eruption during their stay.
