Activity at Gaua volcano on Vanuatu remains low. The Vanuatu Meteorological and Geohazards Department reports that the volcano is now emitting less gas, and vegetation near the vent and in the direction of the trade winds on the western side of the island which were burnt by acid rains are now growing again. As our expedition leader Yasmin reports from our ongoing expedition on Vanuatu, exceptionally good weather conditions allowed to observe 4 active lava lakes that are at the moment present on Ambrym volcano: the largest is located in Marum's Mbuwelesu crater at a depth of ca. 400m and has a diameter of around 40 m. The 3 other lava lakes are in the pit crater Niri Mbuwelesu and inside the two pits inside Benbow crater. ...mehr [alles lesen]

The activity of Yasur has decreased again to normal, but still elevated levels. Bombs are still occasionally falling on the rim and outside, but the frequency and intensity of the explosions is now lower than during late May, when its alert level was raised to 3. Geohazards now lowered the alert to 2. [alles lesen]

Yasur's activity has continued to be very violent, with explosions that often throw bombs onto the visitor's rim and as far as the parking lot. This caused the Department of Geology, Mines and Water Resources from Port Vila to raise the alert level to 3 (out of 4) on 27 May. [alles lesen]

Yasur volcano's activity continues to be dangerously strong. Explosions frequently throw bombs outside the crater onto the rim, the outer flanks and even as far as the ash plane and the parking lot. Alert level remains at 2, as the Department of Geology, Mines and Water Resources from Port Vila stresses in their latest bulletin about Yasur. [alles lesen]

The eruption of Gaua volcano (located in the far north end of the archipel of Vanuatu) is increasing and the situation is worsening for the inhabitants of the island, news articles report. As plumes reach 10,000 ft (3000m) elevation and the fresh ash contaminates water and food supplies on the island, promting authorities to prepare for an evacuation of about 3000 people from the island if the situation continues or gets worse. A moderately powerful explosion at Yasur volcano (26 May 2009)
During our expedition on Tanna Island, we observed Yasur during 25-29 May. Activity was a low to moderate levels in that period and only 3 vents in the western crater were active although glow from the eastern crater was seen. Near-continuous spattering was seen from the westernmost vent, and more powerful ejections from the other two vents were observed at intervals of 10-15 minutes, throwing incandescent lava bombs to 100-150 m height. Only small amounts of ash were usually produced. ...mehr [alles lesen]

The Wellington VAAC reported that a slow moving plume from Lopevi reached a height of 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. on 10 May. On 11 May, a plume rose to 4.6 km (15,000 ft) a.s.l. and trended SE. During 12-13 May, the plume height lessened to 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. as the eruption vigor reportedly decreased. According to Vanuatu's National Disaster Office, a news article reported that on 15 May an eruption at Lopevi produced heavy ashfall extending to the neighboring islands of Ambrym and Paama.

The eruption at Manaro volcano continues at low levels with mainly phreatic activity. A cone is building up inside the lake forming a small island inside the lake. There are two active vents, one of which ejects water, rocks and mud and the other is producing a tall column of steam and gas (up to 8-10,000 feet). A group of New Zealandean volcanologists has recently visited the volcano and sent the following more detailed reports:

The eruption at Mt. Manaro volcano on Vanuatu's island of Ambae, that had started on 27th of Nov. 2005, is continuing at low or decreasing levels (although drawing a lot of media attention, probably because little other significant volcanic events are occurring at the time). Ash and steam plume rose to a maximum of about 3 km (10,000 ft) height into the air as observed on Thursday 7 Dec. According to the optinion of monitoring volcanologists there are no indications at present that the eruption might escalate.
The eruption is occurring from a vent in the middle of the crater lake Vui — before the eruption known as a picturesque blue lake; this is also the main reason for the intense production of steam.
