A vigorous steam and gas plume from Pagan was visible in satellite images during periods of clear weather over the past week, and confirmed by a field crew currently on Pagan Island. This is typical of recent months of observation of Pagan, and no volcanic ash emissions have been detected in satellite images. (USGS)

Satellite imagery showed a plume of gas and water vapor drifting 240 km downwind from Pagan daily during 9-15 February. A USGS team that visited Pagan on 9 February observed a continuous, vigorous plume and noted a sulfur odor downwind of the summit.

The volcano continues to produce a significant steam plume visible on satellite images, and a hot spot above the volcano was detected by MODVOLC yesterday (for the 6tth time in 2012). There are no reports of other eruptive activity.

MODVOLC detected a hot spot at Pagan volcano yesterday, the first time since August 2012. According to USGS, the volcano continues to show only steaming, but it cannot ruled out that the new thermal anomaly might be caused by near-surface lava.
