Stromboli volcano (Eolian Islands, Italy): strong activity and a report from a visit on 5 July

Strong explosion from the NE crater on 5 July
Strong explosion from the NE crater on 5 July
Lien & Lorre sent us the following report from a recent visit to Stromboli:

"Thursday 5th of July, what's in a date... We were lucky to be on the right spot at the right time… Our third day at Stromboli, we went for the easy hike via San Bartolo to the north to the “osservatoria”.
It’s an easy 5km walk. Once you arrive at the restaurant at the “osservatoria” you can take a small footpath that leads you to two look outs, one at altitude 200m and one at 400m. When we arrived at the 400m height, we had a beautiful view at the “Sciara del Fuoco” , the collapsed northern wall of the Stromboli… When the sun went to sleep that day, one of the craterholes started to spit his lava in a continuous way while the other holes kept their rhythmes, that means an explosion every half an hour. After a few hours we started to see an orange glow at the slope… The Stromboli had already spitted that much lava that a stream of lava was born… He only went a bit more then halfway the “Sciara del Fuoco”, at that point the rocks broke down from the head of the stream and went downhill, at highspeed and with a lot of noise, into the Mediterranean sea. An experience we will never forget !!
Finally we visited a volcano in full action ;-) You must know that last summer we went to Hawai’i to see the volcanoes, a few days after we booked our holiday, an earthquake disturbed the lava flows that were going on since 1983. Only 4 months (in 30 years) there was no flow to see... and we were there at that time ;-((
Grtz,
Lien & Lorre"

Powerful eruption of Stromboli's east crater, showering its flanks with incandescent bombs (photo: Marc Szlegat)

Our colleague Marc Szlegat just returned from a visit to Stromboli volcano whose activity has recently been increasing. Marc observed that there were 5 active glowing vents within the crater terrace. The most spectacular explosions took place from the eastern vent, the cone that had been building since 2009. They occurred roughly every 20 minutes, with sometime powerful explosions ejecting lava bombs up to 300 m height, many of which falling onto the Sciara del Fuoco. ...
