Thanks for the comments I discovered a minor bug in the programming that made the map not working under certain circumstances. About the data on the map, it is all truthfully taken as provided from free public, mostly governmental sources (each quake has a link if you like to verify the original data). Most of this data comes from automatic earthquake analysis and detection systems, and there is no reason to believe that these data are intentionally false etc. It is up to everyone to interpret it - we simply post it on a map in the best way we can as a free-time effort, and it is in the first place something I made out of own interest in looking at these data in an easy way. However, it comes with no warranty at all. If other people appreciate it, and donate a few dollars now and then, we are encouraged also to improve it.

23 June 6:00pm (ET):
The Gates of Hell - Italy's Mount Etna is one of the best places for volcano watchers and volcanologist Tom Pfeiffer is hoping to get lucky and see a paroxysmal eruption, a short and very intense eruption that produces spectacular lava fountains.
23 June 6:30 pm (ET):
The Fires of Pele - The number one tourist attraction on the island of Hawaii is a volcano called Kilauea, one of the most active in the world. After a sudden collapse of the crater floor, a massive eruption drains the volcano of lava and now Kilauea is silent. Geologist Phillip Ong finally has his chance to explore the volcano.
We are pleased that the first episodes (Hawai'i, Italy, Indonesia and Danakil) of the new HD TV documentary by Michael Dalton featuring VolcanoDiscovery on expedition is on air!

There are few forces on earth that equal the power and destructive force of a volcano. Their impact has helped shape this planet, altered climates, and laid waste to entire civilizations. That destructive power has terrified, awed and fascinated humans for centuries. However for those who understand them, they are beautiful spectacles of the earth’s inner mechanism at work. Out of the approximately 550 active volcanoes on the planet, few are ever destructive. They remain content to put on a spectacle for all those near, or increasing numbers of adventurers who dare to venture to remote locations to watch one of natures most incredible shows.
Where there is a demand, there is opportunity. A small German based company company founded by Volcanologist Tom Pfeiffer, together with his team of local experts, cater to the adventurous and volcano curious and take guests on exciting journeys around the world to the most eruptive volcanoes. From the notorious and deadly Krakatoa, to the remote and inhospitable heat of the Danakil Depression of Ethiopia, Volcano Discovery will follow Tom and his crew as they l take viewers into world of beauty and awe of this somewhat misunderstood spectacle.
After 7 years of closure, following the tragic accident of the roof collapse of the newly built shelter in 2005, the archeological site of Akrotiri on Santorini (Greece) is now open for visitors again.
The site shows a small part of an excavated city that flourished in the 17th century BC, but like Pompeii almost 2000 years alter, was buried by the ash of a large volcanic eruption on Santorini, the Minoan eruption at around 1613 BC. It is one of the most important archeological sites not only in Greece, but in whole SE Europe and in itself makes a visit to Santorini worthwhile.
As geologist Jennfier Jay (Cornell University) writes to our German colleagues on vulkane.net, we should not expect Uturuncu volcano erupt any time soon:
"I’m glad that Uturuncu has been getting some attention in the media, but I don’t want to make people think that Uturuncu is about to erupt! We think that the deformation of Uturuncu is caused by magma emplacement in the mid-crust, but whether or not this magma will ever be erupted is another question that we are trying to answer. From the data that we have collected so far, we see no evidence for a supervolcanic eruption in the near future."
DI event = Deflation-Inflation event: the volcano inflates when magma rises into the shallow reservoir, and deflates when that magma erupts to the surface or drops back into a deeper reservoir.
We have placed the volcano at status level "yellow" (2 on a scale of 0-5, unrest). Our scale has no official meaning and is different from the USGS scale of color codes raning from 1-4 ("green"-"yellow"-"orange"-"red").
Unfortunately, the government of Azerbaijan has recently decided to forbid access to the Mud volcanoes. To read more, see this article on Azerbaijan24.com.
Thank you!
"I have organized a vehicle, driver, guide and accommodation to visit Lake Hyak, Kombolcha, Bati livestock market (Mondays: the largest in East Africa), & then drive to Awash, and onto Harar for a couple of nights there. Fly to Addis Ababa from Dire Dawa. Domestic flight is $74 USD. There would be a couple of seats available if someone from your trip wishes to do something similar. We could then share the costs."
If anyone is interested in joining a trip to Nicaragua to see Concepcion, Masaya (Night/Day), San Cristobal, Montotombo, Santa Clara, Telica, Cerro Negro, El Hoyo Volcanoes from 5th to 14th January 2012 please get in touch. Please note you need to be in good physical condition to do the tour as it is very active and not much rest time.
I stayed many many times in this hotel, both alone or with groups. The managers, Maria and Anna, are sweet and charming, and the ambiance has something special. No wonder, that many guests return each year.
Besides, I love the simple style of the hotel, the location, and the priceless view over the caldera... - HIGHLY recommended if you like it simple, quiet and beautiful!
