Beschreibung:

Esjufjöll volcano, like Öraefajökull, is hidden beneath the immense glacier of Vatnajökull at its SE end, north of Öræfajökull volcano. It is actually not known wether it also has a central caldera. A small eruption in 1927, however, caused a relatively large jökulhlaup (glacier meltwater outburst), which is the only known historical eruption from Esjufjöll.
