The Icelandic Meteorological Office has informed authorities about unusual seismicity at Hekla volcano, which could be a precursor to a new eruption, and increased the volcanic alert level to yellow. Monitoring of the volcano will be intensified, as Hekla is not only one of the most active, but also one of the potentially most hazardous volcanoes of the country. The last eruption was in March 2000. On average, the volcano has been erupting about every 10 years, and it would statistically seen be due for a new one. ...

 Beschreibung:Hekla befindet sich am südlichen Ende der östlichen Rift-Zone. Er sitzt auf einer Kreuzung Riss-Transform und produzierte basaltischen Andesit, im Gegensatz zu den Tholeiitic Basalte typische isländische Rift Zone Vulkane. Die Hekla Tephras sind in der Regel reich an Flourine, die ist sehr gefährlich für weidende Tiere.Die längliche Form des Vulkans ist eine 5,5 km lange, flach, rund, Heklugjá, veranlaßte, die erstreckt sich über den Vulkan und ist häufig bei großen Eruptionen aktiv über die volle Länge. Wiederholt, dass solche Ausbrüche, schräg zur die meisten rifting Strukturen in der östlichen vulkanischen Zone der Hekla längliche ENE-WSW Profil erstellt haben.Häufige große explosive Ausbrüchen in historischen Zeiten Tephra in ganz Island eingezahlt haben und bieten wichtige Zeit-Marker, die Eruptionen von andere Vulkane in Island bisher verwendet werden können.Hekla Fotos:
