The past week was dominated by the paroxysm at Fuego volcano on 20 May and ongoing strong explosive activity at Shiveluch in Kamchatka. The new Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report was published today and is summarized as follows: ...mehr [alles lesen]
Sakurajima volcano on Kyushu, Japan, remains in a state of elevated activity. During the past week, strong vulcanian explosions from the Showa Crater often occurred multiple times per day, and generated tall ash plumes reaching 4 km altitude. A small pyroclastic flow reaching 300 m length occurred during an explosion on 21 May. ...mehr [alles lesen]
The paroxysmal eruption of Fuego volcano, Guatemala, on 19-20 May is summarized in the following Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report: ...mehr [alles lesen]

Almost no earthquakes have occurred since the last update, and intervals between the occasional weak quakes are becoming longer. In addition, degassing activity from the submarine vents has decreased and there are no more visible stain or jacuzzi reported from near La Restinga. We therefore decided to put El Hierro back to "green" [alles lesen]

As a recent visit to Anak Krakatau shows, the summit lava dome inside the crater continues to grow. So far, no significant explosive activity seems to have taken place, but that could change quickly. [alles lesen]

Lava continues to flow on Kīlauea's coast, while its summit and rift zone continue to glow. Generally higher pressure over the past week, with fluctuations, has pushed new lava flows closer to the ocean than any time previously this year, but most are spreading out parallel to the coastline rather than directly to the ocean. Meanwhile, over the past week a new eastern flow branch developed above the pali and is now advancing down its steepest part, looking within reach of the coastal plain today. This eastern branch appears quite vigorous, and must be diverting a fair amount of lava from the flows near the coast. Stay tuned to find out if lava will reach the ocean for the first time in 2012 or if the volcano grows a new system of lava tubes or both! [alles lesen]
A new NASA satellite image reveals a fresh lava flow on Bagana volcano's eastern flank. It is unknown when the eruption started, but comparison with older images implies that it must have begun some time between March 2011 and February 2012. ...mehr [alles lesen]

The Sirung stratovolcano on the remote Pantar island in Indonesia has come back to life with a series of probably phreatic explosions and strong degassing. ...mehr [alles lesen]

Katla volcano continues to show signs of increased unrest. A small glacial flood occurred from under the volcano's icecap Katla around 28 April 2012 and possibly again around 7-8 May, both times accompanied by increased levels of harmonic tremor. This suggests that magma movements inside the volcano might be heating up the ground, causing increased melting. ...mehr [alles lesen]

A slight increase of seismic activity has been noted recently. On 12 May, 5 small quakes occurred in the western part of the island at depths of 2-17 km. It is unlikely that this is a precursor of a new eruptive phase, but rather reflects residual magma movements and minor tectonic adjustments at the recently emplaces dikes beneath the island. Kīlauea's lava flows have surged in activity on the coastal plain accompanying inflation at the summit, though following by about 24 hours. This activity is farther from the ocean than before, relatively close to the base of the pali but moving quickly across cooling flows from the previous two months. Check out our new time-lapse movie showing the height of activity! [alles lesen]

Since entering the National Park, lava flows have continued to slowly advance towards the ocean but have not made much ground. Pressure variations propagating through Kīlauea volcano have kept the flows from building momentum, but they have persisted sluggishly and lava flows are still visible by means of a 6-7mi / 9-11km round-trip hike from the Kalapana side. When the lava is flowing more slowly (like right now), it actually gives us a chance to approach and interact with it more easily, whereas more vigorous flows require additional safety considerations. For non-hikers, strong glow continues from the summit, visible from Jaggar Overlook & Museum! [alles lesen]
Since about 2 hours ago, tremor from Etna has started to rise steeply, suggesting that the next (26th) paroxysm of the New SE crater is probably imminent. At the moment, visible observations are difficult due to cloud cover, but it could be expected that there is some strombolian activity right now from the crater. ...mehr [alles lesen]

Nicaragua's Masaya volcano, located about 20 km south of Managua city, has entered a new eruptive phase. The latest report of the Instituto Nicaragüense de Estudios Territoriales (INETER) mentions 24 small ash and steam explosions that were recorded between 30 April and 1 May. 9 of these explosions produced ash clouds that rose about 500 m above the Santiago crater rim. ...mehr [alles lesen]
