Ash plumes rose to altitudes of 6-9 km (19,700-29,500 ft) a.s.l. during 22-28 August and drifted mainly NW, W, and SW. IG reported noises resembling the sounds made by blocks rolling down the flanks were reported during 22-26 August and explosions rattled windows in surrounding areas, including Baños 8 km to the N, on 24 and 25 August. Ashfall was reported in nearby areas, especially to the NW, W, and SW, during 25-28 August. On 28 August, lahars affected W and NW drainages, the Pampas sector, and interrupted traffic on the route between Ambato and Baños. Incandescent blocks rolled down the flanks. [less]

August. In the last several weeks, four 'a'a flows had started from the open lava channel fed by Fissure D. From the second flow, each had advanced along the N edge of the previous one. The first two flows advanced a total of 6.3 km from the fissure source by 24 August. On 25 August, HVO geologists confirmed that the first three flows were inactive and the fourth flow had advanced 300 m and burned vegetation at the forest edge. During 25-26 August, the channel overflowed at a point about 1 km from the vent and spread along a section of the channel about 200-300 m long. During 27-28 August, the fourth flow was about 5.1 km from the vent and continued to advance. [less]

Observed 'a'a and pahoehoe flows traveled a few hundred meters from the vents. The overall thickness of the flows varied but reached several meters in places. Lava channels and lava tubes were abundant. Fault scarps with fresh breaks and rockfalls were noted. The area affected by tectonic and volcanic activity was an estimated 5-7 km long and 1 km wide.
According to eye-witness accounts, a cracking sound was heard and a tremor was felt on 12 August. On 13 August, "fire" was seen that lit up a large area. "Fire and smoke" continued with variable intensity until 16 August. No damage to life or property was reported. [less]

It is likely this is in fact not an eruption related to Erta Ale volcano. A more likely candidate could benearby Dabbahu volcano, a new fissure which had its first historic eruption in late Sept (26) - early Oct 2005. It could also be even a new volcano born from a new fissure: a new episode in the dramatic chapter of Earth's History called the "Splitting apart of East Africa". The occurrence of fissures and fissure eruptions in the area is not surprising, given the very geologic nature of the Afar triangle. Here, the two segments of the African plate and the adjacient Arabian plate are being pulled apart from each other, as East AFrica is slowly moving away from the rest of the continent. At the same time, the Red sea and the Gulf of Aden are widening and those movements are combined in the triple junction, which is the Afar triangle. Here, the crust is continuing to thin and the ground is sinking, until until one day, in geologically near future, the land will be flooded by the Red Sea to mark the initial stage of a new ocean. HVO's Volcano Watch article summarizes the recent changes:

"Dramatic changes in the long-lived Pu`u `O`o - Kupaianaha have occurred in the past two months. The crater and west side of Pu`u `O`o collapsed, partially refilled with lava, then collapsed again as new vents erupted first uprift then downrift of the cone on June 19 and July 21. Lava is now erupting from the lower end of the July 21 fissure located at the base of the Kupaianaha shield, which was active between 1986 and 1992. [less]

According to the Jakarta Post, several hundred people have been evacuated from villages on the slopes of the volcano. A major explosive eruption could happen in the near future, volcanologist estimate. [less]

An abrupt increase in earthquake activity began at Pavlof Volcano on 14 August. The first observed activity was during the night to 15 Aug, when eye witnesses aboard several ships report incandescent blocks down the east-southeast flank of the volcano.
On 16 Aug and the past days, seismic and eruptive activity continued to increase slowly and the main type of activity seems to be the extrusion of an active viscous lava flow from the summit. A strong thermal anomaly is dtectable from satellite imaginery. [less]

Last evening (August 8, 2007) Fuego produced a spectacular eruption as seen from Antigua. Apparently the resulting flow of lava, etc., was primarily down the south and west flanks, the opposite side from Antigua. There appeared to be some lava flow down the eastern flank, but it was difficult to be certain, as there were clouds obscuring the view. We first became aware of the eruption at around 6:45, but it may have been in progress for some time. It continued until at least 10 pm Guatemala time, but at that time either stopped or was too obscured by clouds for us to see continued activity.
This morning there is a small constant plume of steam or ash. [less]

The Volcanic Alert Level remained at Watch and the Aviation Color Code remained at Orange through at least 30 July. On the 27th AVO noted that low-level eruptive activity continued. Three small SO2 clouds produced by small explosions on 20 July were detected in OMI satellite data provided by the University of Maryland Baltimore County. No further explosive activity had been detected by the OMI sensor since that time. AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest. [less]
