The VolcanoDiscovery presentation of the 4 Greek volcanoes at the German volcanological museum Lava-Dome in Mendig/Germany on Oktober 29th was successful. Tobias Schorr introduced the public to the unknown Greek volcanoes and their geological and cultural history. Milos as the beginning of the first industrial mining in Greek history was the start. He explained how the mining of obsidian was important for prehistoric people and how the tools were used and exported from Milos to other Greek islands. The Minoan eruption of Santorini´s volcano and its impact in prehistoric culture was one of the most interesting facts in his presentation. The public also loved his photos from Methana volcanic peninsula and his presentation of some rock samples after the show. The next presentation will take place in the VHS-Remagen/Germany on 25 November.
There are still continuously emitted ash plumes that rose to altitudes of 5-7 km.
Suwanose-jima produced explosion or eruption plumes that rose to 1-3 km at the time of 21-28 October.
There are still strong eruptions on the crater summit that produce ash avalances, pyroclastic flows and ash plumes. The lava dome is growing.
The Darwin VAAC reported that a ash plume from Semeru that rose to an altitude of 4.3 km and drifted WSW on 22 October.
Ash plumes were reported during 21-26 October on Rabaul´s caldera.
There was a tremor reported that was connected with the emission of ash plumes on 26 October.
On 22-28 October lava flowded through a tube system at Kilauea´s Thanksgiving Eve Breakaout and was reaching the Waikupanaha ocean entry. On October 23 a plume was observed near the ocean entry. Acid rain caused a closure of the area for public also on 25 October.
It was reported that there have been some grey plumes rose to altitudes of about 4-5,5 km.
Ash plumes were reported by viewing the volcano webcam and satellite images from 24-28 October. Also a thermal anomaly was detected.
Three ash plumes were emitted from Villarrica volcano on 26 October.
It was reported that there were earthquakes at Kliuchevskoi during 17-24 October and also fumarolic activity has been noted over the time of 17-23 October. Also a thermal anomaly has been noted on satellite images. The Level of Concern Color Code remained Orange.
Some white & grey ash and gas plumes were observed at Colima volcano during 22-28 October 2008.

IG reported that multiple lahars and mudflows descended drainages around Tungurahua on 14 October. A majority of the lahars traveled down drainages in the Pampas sector to the S, carrying blocks an average of 30-40 cm in diameter and up to 2 m in diameter. Other lahars and small mudflows descended drainages to the NW and W. On 19 October a small lahar descended the Bilbao drainage to the W.

It was reported that seismic activity at Kliuchevskoi was above background levels during 10-17 October. Fumarolic activity was noted during 10-11 and 13-16 October. Observers in Klyuchi, about 30 km to the NE, reported nighttime incandescence in the crater on 13 and 14 October. Analysis of satellite imagery revealed a thermal anomaly in the crater during 10-11 and 13-15 October. The Level of Concern Color Code remained Orange.
Over the past months, Colima was relatively calm and only produced small ash eruptions. An overflight of scientists from Colima University revealed that the lava dome continues to grow at a slow rate.
Ubinas continues to produce near-continuous strong ash explosions that produce plumes rising to altitudes of 5-7 km (16,000-23,000 ft) a.s.l., which over the past week mostly drifted SE and NW.
Shiveluch's activity remains high. The growing lava dome has been producing pyroclastic flows and ash plumes rising to an altitude of 6 km (19,700 ft) a.s.l. ...mehr
RVO reported that during 12-20 October ash plumes from Rabaul caldera's Tavurvur cone rose to an altitude of 0.9-2.7 km (3,000-8,900ft) a.s.l. and drifted N, NW, S, and SE. Ashfall was reported in areas downwind. During 20-21 October, large explosions occurred and ash plumes rose to altitudes of 1.7-3.7 km (5,600-12,100 ft) a.s.l. A significant amount of ash fell in the area of Rabaul town (3-5 km NW). Continuous incandescence from the vent was observed and loud roaring noises were reported.

Tobias Schorr came just back from a very nice private walking study tour on Methana. The weather allowed many interesting walks into the mountains of Methana. Old friends and the great landscape were the highlights. Tobias is still planning new tours on Methana for 2009. We will keep you updated.

I was on a flight yesyerday from Jember to Surabaya with 2 friends and saw Mt Semeru explode at app. 09.37 on the 18 Oct 2008. We were about 20 km from the mountain when I noticed the the top had a small gray mushroom at the top with in a minute or so i was extremley greater in size. I would not be able to guess how high it rose but it was larger than the clouds around. I'm just sending this message as I did not read anything in the news. ...mehr [alles lesen]

A new small eruption took place at the lava dome of Soputan volcano on 6 October. Ash explosions produced plumes rising to 2.8 km (9,200 ft) a.s.l. and were accompanied by Strombolian activity that ejected incandescent material 50-150 m above the crater. On 7 October, white plumes rose to altitudes of 2.3-3.3 km (7,500-10,800 ft) a.s.l. Incandescent material was again ejected 50-150 m from the crater. Incandescent rockfalls traveled 500 m W. The next day, plumes rose to an altitude of 2 km (6,600 ft) a.s.l. and in the following days, the activity decreased. ...mehr
