No more ash explosions have been reported recently from Sinabung volcano. The crater remains active with strong degassing, creating a small steam plume.

As our expedition leader Yasmin reports from our ongoing expedition on Vanuatu, exceptionally good weather conditions allowed to observe 4 active lava lakes that are at the moment present on Ambrym volcano: the largest is located in Marum's Mbuwelesu crater at a depth of ca. 400m and has a diameter of around 40 m. At least one powerful explosion, probably the strongest so far, occured today at Sinabung volcano on Sumatra. The ash plume reached 25,000 ft elevation (ca. 8km) and the type of eruption can probably be best qualified as vulcanian, similar to Krakatau's activity in 2009. According to news articles, heavy ash fall prevented more than 23,000 people from returning to their homes.

After three days of calmness, another strong ash explosion of Sinabung volcano happened around 04:45 early morning local time on Fri 3 Sep. According to news reports, the explosion was heard and felt up to 8 km away from the volcano and while the size of the eruption is dificult to asses, it seems to have been the biggest explosion so far. ...mehr

No further eruptions seem to have occured on Sinabung after the eruptions of 29-30 August. Many of the ca. 12,000 evacuated people are returning to their homes. Indonesian scientists warn that the eruption might very well not be over yet, as tremor continues at the volcano, suggesting that magma is still rising within the conduit.

According to VAAC Darwin, ash plumes from the new eruption at Sinabung volcano are reaching at least 6 km / 20,000 ft., although most other reports including those from the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia talk about ash plumes bout 2000 m high, i.e. reaching about 4-5 km a.s.l.

Der Vulkan Sinabung ist nach langer Zeit der Ruhe am 29 August 2010 wieder zu neuer Aktivität erwacht. Der Vulkan wurde nicht wissenschaftlich überwacht und überraschte die Bewohner der Region. Nach Augenzeugen hat es mitternachts vor der Eruption starke Erdbeben gegeben und kurz danach konnte man Lava vom Gipfel fließen sehen. Aschefall begrenzte die Sicht auf weniger als 5 m. Die Aschesäule soll auf 4000 m Höhe gestiegen sein und ca. 12000 Menschen wurden vorsorglich evakuiert. Bei der Evakuierung soll es einen Todesfall gegeben haben.

A powerful explosion occured without warning at the Bocca Nuova summit crater of Etna volcano. The explosion was probably phreatic in origin and caused by a sudden release of gas and vapour trapped beneath a plug of collapse material that had been plugging the vents. On 8 and 10 August, strong explosions probably occurred at Ambrym volcano. The Wellington Ash Advisory noted ash-and-steam plumes from Ambrym that rose to an altitude 6.1 km (20,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W and NW.

After several weeks of closure, the access to the summit of Stromboli for guided tours has been reopened. It is mandatory to be accompanied by one of authorized guides.
A sudden eruption at Karangetang volcano in the remote island of Siau in the Sangihe archipel north of N Sulawesi happened on Friday 5 August and killed at least 4 people, as various news report. During a recent visit to Krakatau from 12-14 July on one of our tours, ash eruptions were observed, producing plumes of several hundreds of meters. During night, however, no incandescence was seen.
As INSIVUMEH reports, Santiaguito's lava dome continues to be active and produces between 10-20 small to medium ash eruptions per day.

Following the strong explosions on 30 June that prompted the Italian Civil Protection to close the summit for visitors, the activity at Stromboli volcano has been normal the past days. The closure to the summit area remains, and visitors are only allowed to go up to the 400 m viewpoint. The regular excursions to the summit are suspended for now. ...mehr

Karymsky volcano had a moderate ash eruption yesterday, Russian media reports. The ash plume reached 7 km altitude (ca. 22,000 ft).
