Day 2: Caldera walking

Spectacular walk along the caldera from Fira to Ia. After a bus trip to the capital of Santorini island - Fira. We stroll through the narrow lanes dotted with shops and cafés. We visit the archaeological museum, where items discovered in the excavated Minoan settlement near Akrotiri are exposed. Later we will visit an interesting exhibition of 3D-reconstructions of the Minoan wall-paintings. In the afternoon, we walk along the caldera back towards Oia village. There are great views into the volcano caldera that offer many motifs for unforgettable photographs. In a little café at the caldera rim we will enjoy fresh-pressed orange-juice and homemade nutcake. Our route passes by some fresh-looking volcanic cinder cones. To enjoy its famous sunset, we are back in Oia village. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 3: The read beach & Acrotiri peninsula

Today, we drive to the small village of Akrotiri, where the prehistoric Minoan town has been excavated. If the excavations have been reopened by then (they were closed to public because of an accident in Oct. 2005), we can visit them... We will walk along the coast line to the famous “red beach” with its cinder cone. At the Taxiarhes chapel we will see an uplifted magma-chamber that did not come to surface but built  a little hill. Here there is a possibility to find some rare marine fossils. We will stroll over the fava- & vine-fields and will relax at a little tavern with local specialities. A bus or taxi will carry us back to our hotel.

Day 4: Boat trip to the volcano islands

In the morning we embark on a chartered boat that will be at our disposal for the day. From the little port of Amouthi we sail to the youngest land of Greece: Nea Kameni, the still active volcano of Santorini. We will start early in the morning, avoiding the crowds and having the best light of the moon-like crater landscape. Hot gas-exhalations (so called "fumaroles") show that the magma chamber below the volcano is still active. Later, we sail along the island to the other volcanic island Palea Kameni and arrive at Thirasia island*. There we will have a break in one of the taverns or will walk up to the village of Manolas. Enjoying the spectacular cliffs of the caldera near Thirasia and Oia from the boat, we return to Oia in the afternoon.(B, D) *If we stay with our friend Sostis on Palea Kameni, may be that we do not visit Thirasia, because we get a nice picnic at his home...

After a walk through the lanes of the village and its castle the bus bring us on the highest mountain of Santorini - the Prophitis Ilias mountain. From there, we walk along an Ancient trail to the ancient Greek acropolis of Thira*. In spring there are many orchids and other rare plants. After about two hours we will arrive at the excavations. Later on, we walk down to the black sand beach of Perissa, where we can get refreshments and / or swim in the sea. The bus will take us back to our hotel in the late afternoon.(B, D)
