The most active volcanoes of middle Europe - the German Eifel region
The Eifel region is the most active volcanic area in Germany. The last gigantic eruption took place at the so called "Laacher See". This explosion (about 6 km³ pumice was thrown out!) took place about 12900 ago and left a huge crater. The landscape around was covered by ca. 30-80 m of pumice. In the Eifel region there are about 300 volcanoes and there is still a active magma chamber below the Eifel ("Eifel plume project").
Our guide Sabine will give you a introduction of Germanys most interesting volcanoes. On the walking-study-tour you will visit the famous Laacher See volcano, collect rare minerals at pumice quarries and discover the famous quarry of "Wingertsbergwand". The local volcano museum is one of the targets to understand how a volcano erupts and later you will be able to relax at the famous German beer at the "Basaltkeller". The tour is a combination of activity, mineral collecting and discovering the signs of the still active volcanoes in Germany, like "mofettes". |
