In Feb. 2007, Ol Doinyo Lengai's summit was characterized by the formation of a large collapse crater and the absense of visible activity. However, magma moving at shallow depths beneath the surface was clearly audible.

We decided to revisit Anak Krakatau in early July. Its activity of Anak Krakatau was still moderately strong, although individual explosions only occurred at intervals between 1-4 hrs. Generally, eruptions were more ash-rich than in November, these eruptions were rich in ash, with frequent small lightnings in the ash plumes that reached up to about 1 km height. (c)

Powerful explosions from the NE vent often sent bombs to more than 500m high, reaching Pizzo and the Bastimento viewing areas (which remained closed most of the time). Most of the material ejected during its ongoing eruption is ash and blocks from the crater and conduit walls. Incandescent material (i.e. fresh magma) was first observed at Bromo in Dec 2010. Mild strombolian activity was visible at night during our tour from 15-19 Feb, usually accomanied by hissing and soft explosion sounds. At least two different vents were active inside Bromo's crater. Most of the strombolian activity took place from the vent in the W half (right in the pictures) of the crater, while a vent in the eastern half (left) was the principal site of ash emissions and occasional powerful explosions accompanied by loud detonations and shock waves rattling windows in up to several kilometer distance. In May 2009, lava levels have risen inside the conduits of Ambrym volcano, feeding strong activity of spattering and low lava fountaining inside the vents of Benbow crater. Favoured by exceptional weather conditions, we were able to descend into the crater and have unusually clear views of the inner crater walls, the vents as well its spectacular activity. After a 36 hrs pause in activity between the evening of 30 June and the morning of 2 July, Anak Krakatau started again with powerful vulcanian explosions. The largest of these explosions were preceded by an inflation and shaking of the active cone or lava dome, triggering rock-slides from its flanks, until the plug gave way in giant explosions ejecting a rapdly expanding mass of red-hot lava, solid rocks, and large amounts of ash, forming plumes of up to 2 km heights. Bromo's eruption is characterized by strong, near continuous ash emission. The photos here were taken between 15 and 19 February. At times, the emissions were accompanied by constant noises resembling ocean surf, interrupted by powerful shock-wave producing blasts reminding of cannon fire. In between, phases of silent emission of huge, billowing ash clouds occured as well. Ash emission was decreasing from 17 Feb on, and became only intermittent. At the same time, strombolian activity in the crater with at night visible incandescence seemed to increase. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Lava flows from Pu`u `O`o vent's newest fissure, which began erupting in September, have finally advanced onto Kīlauea's coastal plain and are accessible by foot! It is a 2-3 hour hike EACH WAY over very uneven terrain, typically a 6 hour round-trip from Kalapana.

After the powerful paroxysm at South East Crater on 10 May 2008, a spectacular fissure eruption started on 13 May, opening a 1000 m long, E-W trending fissure starting at the base of the SE crater, and extending into the upper flanks of Valle del Bove.
The activity started with impressive ground deformation where the advancing dike openend the ground, hurling out blocks of older material, some more than tens of meters across. At the fissure, curtains of fire fountains formed from at least 15 vents and produced a fluid lava flow that quickly descended into Valle del Bove. After about one day, the eruption waned quickly to stabilize into mild strombolian activity from a few vents on the upper part of the fissure between 2800 and 2900m.a.s.l. This activity prevailed when our team visited the eruption sites between 15 and 24 May, which is documented in the following photos. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Nyamuragira volcano (DR Congo): photos of the new eruption Nov 2011 (7 Images)

The hot springs at Polichnitos (Lesbos Island) are volcanic in origin. They range in temperature between 67°C and 92°C and are among the hottest natural springs in Europe.
You can admire colorful rivers and ponds, or enjoy them in a small nearby traditional spa on location.

Our friend Paul Hloben visited the eruption site on 19-20 November (special permit was needed to stay more than one night). A selection of his photos are here. He notes: "The eruption changed from the earlier continuous lava fountaining to almost continuous strombolian-type activity (blasts every second or so). According GVO weekly reports it seems a normal development. This type of activity was exactly what Haroun Tazieff described seeing N-gira in the spring of 1948 in Crateres en Feu: “Every twitch of anger was followed by a brief moment of calm. Brown or blue, the smoke rose in heavy spirals, while a deafening roar, similar to a monstrous hound, rocked the volcano. The nerves had no time to relax, so close was another sudden tremor, another explosion, the return of the incandescence, start of a new volley. The bombs of lava rose with a drone.”
We observed from south (as per Virunga NP blog description). There were definitely 3 craters erupting along the approximately WE fissure (not 100% sure about the direction). There was probably one or 2 more vents spitting lava, difficult to say (as per my video scrutinizing)." (Photo: Paul Hloben)

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos is one of the most fascinating and rare monuments of geological heritage in the world. Its creation, 20.000 000 year ago is connected with the intense volcanic activity in the Aegean during the Miocene period. In 1985, the forest was declared a Protected Natural Monument.

An unual wave of bad staormy weather hit Sicily early in mid to end October 2007,- when our tour Etna to Stromboli took place. We experienced several violent rain storms, were stuck on Vulcano Island for two days, had snow on Etna, got wet and dry again, saw water spouts and impressive colors.
This page is dedicated to my wonderful group, who took everything with a great deal of humour: Kevin, Keith, Chris, Joe, Brian, Rob, Dave and Ray. (c)

Milos north coast has one of the geological wonders of the world to offer: the section around Sarakinikos Bay,- cliffs of ancient volcanic ash and pumice flow deposits, spectacularly polished and gullied by erosion.
Normally, a sunbathers paradise in summer, it reveals a rough beauty when the wind and waves become stronger.

During our recent Stromboli to Etna tour, our group climbed Stromboli volcano on 15 July with a mountain guide and were lucky to have excellent weather and very strong activity from several vents. Ngadirejo village in the district of Probolinggo, East Java, lies close to the Tengger caldera. It is one of the areas that suffered most from ash fall during Bromo's recent eruption. Up to 30 cm of dense, black ash have accumulated in the area, on fields, roads and houses, burying literally everything.
The thick blanket of ash has killed almost all vegetation, destroyed crops, and damaged houses, power lines and water supply. The area has been declared disaster zone by Indonesian authorities. Despite this, only few people have actually left their houses. People in the village are optimistic and determined to resist the ongoing crisis and carry on with their lives as well as possible. A VolcanoDiscovery expedition spent 4 nights on Krakatau from 4-8 June and observed strong strombolian activity, often accompanied by loud blasts, from a new vent located between the old summit crater and the 2007 crater. This activity has essentially filled the 2007 crater with a new cinder cone and 'healed' the 2007 scar. At the time of leaving the island yesterday, activity was still going strong. The most frequent type of activity was ash venting, occuring at intervals of typically 2 minutes, but the resulting plumes were relatively low ash clouds. Some of the more powerful explosions produced tall plumes of over 1 km height. (c)

At Dallol there was a mining community where an Italian and later a U.S. company mined potash; being in use since the early 1900s it was abandoned in the 1960s. As most buildings were made of salt blocks and because of the extremely aggressive environment, the town and factory as well as what remains of a railway leading to Eritrea is little more than a pile of rubble and rust today. Stromboli's activity was extraordinarily high during much of 2006, as we could find during our repeated visits on our tours. There were about 10 active vents, most of which ejected material, sometimes to up to 3-400 m height. On one occasion, one of the vents (a steep cone in the NE corner of the central crater; it collapsed shortly after) was blowing countless beautiful gas rings ("smoke rings").
