In August and early September 2011, Stromboli's activity was at unusually strong levels. Powerful explosions from the NE vent often sent bombs to more than 500m high, reaching Pizzo and the Bastimento viewing areas (which remained closed most of the time). Small intracrater lava flows were observed in this period as well. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

During our recent Stromboli to Etna tour, our group climbed Stromboli volcano on 15 July with a mountain guide and were lucky to have excellent weather and very strong activity from several vents. In particular, spectacular activity was occurring from the NE cone, which exploded large liquid lava bubbles, showering the outside flank with glowing bombs. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Stromboli's activity was extraordinarily high during much of 2006, as we could find during our repeated visits on our tours. There were about 10 active vents, most of which ejected material, sometimes to up to 3-400 m height. On one occasion, one of the vents (a steep cone in the NE corner of the central crater; it collapsed shortly after) was blowing countless beautiful gas rings ("smoke rings"). Tom presents you a sample of his photos, all taken at the end of June and beginning of July 2006. (c)
