The volcanic island of Milos

Milos island 2001. View towards Prophitis Ilias mountain (c) Tobias Schorr
To most people, Milos is known as the place where the famous statue of Venus in the Louvre museum in Paris was found. Some know of its extraordinary beaches and colorful rock formations that are unmatched almost anywhere. Much less people know that it is a geologically young volcanic island where volcanic activity has produced rich mineral deposits (perlite, bentonite, baryte, silver, and others) that have always been exploited. Milos' significant history of mining dates back into prehistory,- obsidian (volcanoc glas) from Milos was traded in the whole region at least as as far back as 6000 years! Due to its rich resources, the island was of considerable status in antiquity and traces of it are still there to be found.
Mining still is the island's economic main resource. It is the reason you will find fewer touristic development here than on almost all other islands,- this makes it particularly interesting if you want to visit an original part of Greece that has kept its original charme and character lost in other places.
Our mineralogy and Greece specialist Tobias invites you on tours to discover this fascinating, multifacetted island.
