Nyiamuragira volcano (DRCongo), eruption: new eruption

Nyamuragira volcano (often also spelled Nyamulariga) erupted on Saturday 2nd January. The eruption was located on a fissure on the E flank where violent lava fountains from 4 vents along a new fissure were feeding a new large lava flow advancing towards the Goma-Sake road. Nyamuragira's eruption continues, but the lava output seems to decline. After 5 days, the new lava flows have traveled 21 kilometers and approached the road from Goma to Sae within 7 km. If the eruption continues, the flows may be able to cut the road.

During our pilot expedition to the volcanoes of Guatemala in Dec 2009, Santigaguito lava dome was observed between 25-28 Dec. The lava dome produced ash eruptions roughly every 0.5-3 hours with plumes reaching up to 300-1000 m elevation. On one occasion, a small pyroclastic flow was observed travelling down on the SW side of the lava dome.

Piton de la Fournaise volcano greets the new year with its first eruption in 2010 on 2 January. A fissure vent inside the Dolomieu summit crater erupted lava fountains and a lava flow contained inside the crater, deepened by the large eruption in 2008. The eruption followed a gradual increase inseismic activity since Dec 28. The last, very short-lived eruption happened just about 3 weeks ago, and it seems likely that Piton de la Fournaise has entered a period of frequent but short eruptions, fed by dikes in its highly fractured summit zone, forming of a relatively permeable central plumbing system.

Mayon volcano started to erupt again on Dec 14. The lava dome in the summit of the steep stratovolcano began to grow again and is producing strombolian and vulcanian explosions as well as incandescent rock avalanches and small pyroclastic flows travelling down up to 3 km the SE side of the volcano.
Authorities have raised the alert level to 3 (out of 4) and started to evacuate 50,000 people living in the immediate neighborhood of the volcano.

A new eruption started on Piton de la Fournaise volcano at 18h30 local time on 14 December. Following a seismic crisis lasting about 1 hr, a new vent opened on the S flank of Dolomieu Crater and produced lava flows inside the enclos. Later in the evening, a second fissure opened east of the first vent.
Update 15 Dec:
This eruption ended during the night at 00h40 (GMT +4) after a gradual
decrease in magma supply from midnight (local time). This morning, Tuesday,
December 15, 2009, a visible degassing in the south and southeast fractures
is associated with a low intensity eruptive tremor. All of the lava flows
was confined to high zone of the volcano and more specifically the slopes
south and south-east of Piton de la Fournaise.

Seismic activity from Klyuchevskoi remains above background levels and there is Strombolian activity ejecting tephra up to 300 m above the crater.
Chaitén's lava dome continues its growth and can shed pyroclastic flows and produce ash eruptions at all times. The alert level remains at its highest (red).

The lava dome of Nevado del Huila continues to grow rapidly as INGEOMINAS reports. The volume of the new lava dome is estimated as nearly 25 million cubic meters. Small collapses occurred on the W part of the dome and gas
emissions were sometimes accompanied by pulsating ash emissions. Sulfur dioxide plumes rose 2.5 km above the lava dome and were seen in satellite imagery and the web camera drifting with the prevailing winds.

Karangetang is active again, as the GVP/USGS editors report citing local newspaper sources. Batur might be getting active. According to news articles, a pyroclastic flow and a lahar occurred on 4 November. Residents saw active lava flows the next day. On 11 November, incandescent material was ejected
5 m into the air.

Batur might be getting active. As the Indonesian Volcanological Survey reports, increased seismicity from Batur has been observed from September to 7 November and a significant increase in the number of volcanic earthquakes on 8 November. The Alert Level was raised to 2 (on a scale
of 1-4).

At 1:58 AM on 11 Nov, an ash explosion occurred at the summit crater of Mayon Volcano. The event was not well observed as the summit was in clouds, but recorded on seismographs and iincandescent rock fragments were seen at the upper slope of the steep stratovolcano. ashfall drifted towards the Southwest quadrant of the volcano due to the prevailing Northeast monsoon.

A powerful explosion took place at Stromboli volcano, as Sonja Calvari from INGV Catania reports to the volcano list. Here's the original report:
"Stromboli volcano on 8 November produced a major explosion from the vents in the central crater zone, fragmenting and blowing out part of the eastern flank of the cinder cone. The explosion produced an eruptive column more than 350 m high that was drifted SE by the wind. The explosion was soon followed by a lava flow erupted from the
widened central vent. The lava flow spread within the crater depression for a few minutes, and reached the maximum estimated lenght of ~60 m. Lava flow within the crater depression formed also between 22 and 25 April, on 3 May, and on 30 August 2009. After the 8 November explosion, the explosive activity returned to the background levels."

It seems that the activity reported from 6 November was not strombolian activity but rather the formation of a new collapse pit on the E flank of SE crater, explosing hot gasses and rocks that produced the glow visible on the webcams. Bad weather conditions have hampered inspections on site, but eruptive tremor is absent. However, Etna volcano could erupt any time as measurements indicate that the magma level inside the conduits is high.

Mt Etna volcano is active again. As INGV Catania reports, the activity seems to have started on the evening of 6 November and consists in strombolian explosions from a vent in the eastern depression at the foot of SE crater.

explosive activity at Anak Krakatau has resumed over the past weeks. Strong vulcanian-type eruptions from the growing lava dome in the new crater occur at intervals of 90-360 minutes as Yohannes one of our correspondants reports from a recent visit. Blocks are being thrown over the whole of the southern part of the island, including the forest and often reach the water as well. Small pyroclastic flows sometimes develop on the slope of the summit cone. The island must be regarded as an extremely dangerous place to be at the moment. Whoever visits the island should be aware of the risk of a sudden violent explosion, especially because there is little warning before an explosion and there are long intervals of quiet in between.
