Chinameca volcano (also known as El Pacayal) is a small stratovolcano next to the larger San Miguel volcano in eastern El Salvador. It is connected to San Miguel across a low saddle to the SE.
Chinameca is truncated by a 2-km-wide, steep-sided caldera, Laguna Seca el Pacayal. Coffee plantations cover most of the flanks of the volcano.

Background

Cerro el Limbo is a Holocene flank cone on the western flank A lava flow of Holocene age was also erupted from a NNW-flank vent into the lowlands to the north beyond the town of Chinameca.
Fumarole fields are located on the north flank of the volcano and surround the city of Chinameca. The volcano has been the site of a geothermal exploration program.

1951 earthquake
3 strong shallow earthquakes of 5.9, 6.0 and 5.5 magnitude occurred on 6 and 7 May 1951 near the town of Jucuapa at the NW base of Chinameca volcano. The earthquakes claimed between 400-1000 lives and left 25,000 people homeless.
