The contrast between the sea and the fiery top of Etna could not be bigger: during this tour, entirely dedicated to Etna, you will get to know the different sides of the universe that is Etna volcano, Europe's largest and most active volcano: Etna's ancient pillow lavas at the spectacular "Cyclopes Coast", deep gaping craters, lava deserts, lush mountain forests, lava caves, the beautiful Alcantara gorge, scenic Taormina and medieval villages and - hopefully - lots of lava await you.
One of the highlights of the tour is a full traverse of the summit region of Etna. Accommodation during the tour is in a charming family pension near the coast and in a rustical mountain hotels.

Day 1:
Arrival in Catania - Transfer to Acireale
Pick-up from airport in Catania (or nearby locations) and transfer to Acireale (CT). Tour of the pictureque and lively city center of Acireale. Dinner in a typical restaurant in the historical centre. Acc.: : local B&B*** in double shared rooms (D)
Day 2:
The riviera of the Ciclopi
Transfer to Acitrezza at the scenic "Ciclopi" coast, half-day walk around the black ancient pillow lava basalts of Etna volcano. Back to Acireale in the afternoon and dinner in a typical restaurant in the historical centre. Acc.: : as before (Acireale) (B, D)
Day 3:
Etna's summit craters or Valle del Bove
Whole-day excursion to Etna's summit region. Depending on circumstances, we visit the summit craters, the spectacular Valle del Bove or sites of possible volcanic activity if present. Acc.: : mountain hotel*** on Etna south at 1900 m a.s.l. (B, D)
Day 4:
Etna's summit craters + traverse of the mountain
Ascend towards Etna's summit craters from the south, descend to the north flank Acc.: : mountain hut (Etna north) (B, D)
Day 5:
Linguaglossa - Alcantara Gorge - Taormina
Relaxing day: visit of Taormina and other attractions around Etna, such as the Alcantara Gorge. Acc.: : as before (Etna) (B, D)
Day 6:
Excursion on Etna's north flank: Grotta del Gelo
Whole-day hike to the remote "Grotta del Gelo" lava cave. Acc.: : as before (Etna north) (B, D)
Day 7:
End of tour - transfer to Catania or Taormina
The tour ends after a hearty breakfast and it's time to say goodbye to Etna. Depending on your schedules we bring you back to Catania railway or bus station or the airport in time. If you intend to spend more time in Sicily with its inviting variety of things to do and to see, we can also bring you to Taormina or other places nearby. Acc.: : none (B)
Accommodation:The first two nights are spent in the charming town of Acireale in a family-run B&B. The third and forth nights are spent in a hotel*** on Etna's south side and the last nights in a rustical, fully-equipped mountain hut in a wonderful pine forst (Rifugio Bruneck). Your luggage is transferred while you are on excursion and transfer times are minimized that way. |
