Volcano news from Europe:Wednesday, May 23, 2012
Almost no earthquakes have occurred since the last update, and intervals between the occasional weak quakes are becoming longer. In addition, degassing activity from the submarine vents has decreased and there are no more visible stain or jacuzzi reported from near La Restinga. We therefore decided to put El Hierro back to "green" [read all]

A slight increase of seismic activity has been noted recently. On 12 May, 5 small quakes occurred in the western part of the island at depths of 2-17 km. It is unlikely that this is a precursor of a new eruptive phase, but rather reflects residual magma movements and minor tectonic adjustments at the recently emplaces dikes beneath the island. Since about 2 hours ago, tremor from Etna has started to rise steeply, suggesting that the next (26th) paroxysm of the New SE crater is probably imminent. At the moment, visible observations are difficult due to cloud cover, but it could be expected that there is some strombolian activity right now from the crater. ...more [read all]

Since last night (28 April), new strombolian activity has been observed from Etna's New SE crater. With all likelihood, this announces another paroxysm to occur in the next few days. This would then be the 26th since 2011 when the series of eruptions began, or the 7th in 2012. [read all]

11 days following the last eruption, the 25th paroxysm of Etna's New SE crater is happening at the time of writing in the evening 23 April. It started around 16:00 hrs local time with week Strombolian explosions accompanied by a steeply increasing tremor. [read all]

Weak ash emissions from deep strombolian activity within the New SE crater has been observed since last evening (20 April). If the eruption patterns remains more or less the same, a new paroxysm is probably under way within the next days. [read all]

The 24th paroxysm occurred today at Etna's New SE crater. The main phase lasted between 16:30-17:15 local time and produced tall lava fountains and a lava flow. [read all]
All signs point towards a new paroxysm at Etna's NSEC during the next hours: continuing strombolian activity, steeply rising tremor. [read all]

A small earthquake swarm has been occurring at the western margin of the caldera during the past few days. The swarm consists of about 10 quakes of 1-2 magnitude at 7-8 km depth. [read all]
Strombolian activity has resumed at the New SE crater of Etna last night. Most likely, this is a precursor for a next paroxysm during the coming days. [read all]

During the past days, a new earthquake swarm has been occurring near Santorini. This time, it is in an unusual location about 15 km south of the island, not on the principal volcano-tectonic SW-NE line crossing the caldera. [read all]

What already had been becoming evident late last night, the 23rd paroxysm of Etna's New SE crater occurred early during the second half of the night to 1st April. ...more [read all]

Since this morning, weak Strombolian activity and ash emissions have been observed at the New SE crater. This could be the start of a build-up towards another paroxysm if the eruption pattern is the same as during most of the previous 22 eruptions since early 2011. At the moment, tremor signal is quiet low, but as the past has shown, it could change very quickly. The next paroxysm could probably occur anywhere between today and the next 2 weeks. [read all]

After about 6 weeks of calm, another seismic swarm has started yesterday at Santorini, clustered in the NE sector of the island and near the submarine Kolumbo volcano. The quakes are very small and will not have been felt. The largest was a magnitude 2.0 quake on 18 March at 10:37 GMT at 11 km depth beneath Kolumbo volcano. [read all]

A weak stain has been visible today above the submarine spot in the Las Calmas Sea south of La Restinga, and a jacuzzi occurred faint this morning at 07:30 am. Volcanic tremor seems to continue at constant, although minimal levels. This suggests that the eruption is indeed continuing. [read all]

The 21st paroxysmal eruption of Etna's New SE crater started early on 4 March, following a week of intermittent strombolian activity and accompanied by a steep rise of volcanic tremor. Lava fountains several 100 m tall were rising from the summit crater during the peak phase of the eruption, generating a 2-3 km tall tephra and steam plume, which rose almost vertically due to the absence of strong winds, and drifted SE. ...more [read all]
