 NASA image of Bagana from 16 May 2012 showing an active steaming lava flow
A new NASA satellite image reveals a fresh lava flow on Bagana volcano's eastern flank. It is unknown when the eruption started, but comparison with older images implies that it must have begun some time between March 2011 and February 2012. ...plusBagana is of the most active volcanoes in Papua New Guinea, but extremely remote and there is no ground-based monitoring, which is why satellites provide the most reliable and timely means of monitoring. According to setyoufreenews.com, Mt Lamington volcano in New Guinea is showing some signs of becoming active. According to the brief news, locals from the community of Popendetta reported "smoke and ash emission on March 25". No original source or other reports could be located so far to confirm new activity. ...plusMt Lamington volcano is an andesitic stratovolcano with a 560 m high summit lava dome that grew during 1951-56, following a brutal reawakening with a major explosive eruption in 1951, which produced lava flows and devastating pyroclastic flows, and killed about 3-4000 people. Darwin VAAC a signalé qu'un panache de cendres possible de Karkar a augmenté à une altitude de 7,6-10,7 km (25 000-35 000 pieds) d'altitude et a dérivé NE et e au 1er février. ...plusLe dernier a confirmé l'éruption du volcan distant était le 12 janvier 1979, mais plusieurs panaches de cendres similaire avec une origine possible de Karkar volcan ont été signalés au cours des dernières années.
