After three days of calmness, another strong ash explosion of Sinabung volcano happened around 04:45 early morning local time on Fri 3 Sep. According to news reports, the explosion was heard and felt up to 8 km away from the volcano and while the size of the eruption is dificult to asses, it seems to have been the biggest explosion so far.
Government volcanologist Agus Budianto is quoted by AFP to estimate the height of the plume to be about 3 km (10,000 ft), which would mean reaching an altitude of around 5-6 km (15-18,000 ft). Although ash is not visible from satellite due to cloud cover, VAAC Darwin issued a warning about possible ash up to FL300 (10 km / 30,000 ft elevation).

No further eruptions seem to have occured on Sinabung after the eruptions of 29-30 August. Many of the ca. 12,000 evacuated people are returning to their homes. Indonesian scientists warn that the eruption might very well not be over yet, as tremor continues at the volcano, suggesting that magma is still rising within the conduit.

According to VAAC Darwin, ash plumes from the new eruption at Sinabung volcano are reaching at least 6 km / 20,000 ft., although most other reports including those from the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia talk about ash plumes bout 2000 m high, i.e. reaching about 4-5 km a.s.l.

Sinabung volcano in northen Sumatra oday (Sun, 29 August, 2010) for the first time after probably several hundreds years. The volcano had not been monitored and the eruption came as a surprise.
An eyewitness reported that at around midnight, the ground was shaken violently, and that shortly after, lava could be seen running down from the summit of the volcano, buring forest. Heavy smoke and ash obscured the visibility to sometimes less than 5 meters.
According to VAAC Darwin an ash plume from the eruption has reached 4000 m a.s.l. Press reports speak of around 12,000 evacuated persons, with one fatality occuring during the evacuation.

On 8 and 10 August, strong explosions probably occurred at Ambrym volcano. The Wellington Ash Advisory noted ash-and-steam plumes from Ambrym that rose to an altitude 6.1 km (20,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W and NW.

After several weeks of closure, the access to the summit of Stromboli for guided tours has been reopened. It is mandatory to be accompanied by one of authorized guides.

A sudden eruption at Karangetang volcano in the remote island of Siau in the Sangihe archipel north of N Sulawesi happened on Friday 5 August and killed at least 4 people, as various news report. Several villagers living around the volcano are missing and many others are injured.
While (as usual) not many details about the eruption itself are found in the newspapers, Eric Klemetti from the Eruptions Blog observes that the most likely event was a sudden dome collapse that triggered a pyroclastic flow down the slopes of the steep stratovolcano.
Karangetang is one of Indonesia's most frequently active volcanoes.

During a recent visit to Krakatau from 12-14 July on one of our tours, ash eruptions were observed, producing plumes of several hundreds of meters. During night, however, no incandescence was seen.

As INSIVUMEH reports, Santiaguito's lava dome continues to be active and produces between 10-20 small to medium ash eruptions per day.

Après les fortes explosions du 30 Juin qui ont poussé la Protection Civile Italienne à fermer l’accès au sommet pour les visiteurs, l'activité du volcan Stromboli est redevenue à la normale ces derniers jours. La fermeture de la zone sommitale reste en vigueur, et les visiteurs sont autorisés à monter au point d’observation 400 m d’altitude. Les excursions régulières au sommet sont suspendues pour le moment. Dès qu'il y a des mises à jour, nous les publierons ici.

Une série de fortes éruptions a eu lieu au niveau des cratères du sommet du volcan Stromboli, le 30 juin entre 16h33 et 16h35, heure locale, la plus forte à 16h35. L'accès au sommet a été fermé.

Le volcan Gorely continue à montrer des signes de réveil. L'activité séismique demeure au-dessus du signal de fond, et les scientifiques du KVERT ont rapporté qu’un nouvel évent s'était ouvert sur la paroi interne SE du cratère, au-dessus du niveau du lac. La bouche ouverte était incandescente, et les gaz été émis à des températures de 800-900 degrés Celsius. Le niveau du code de couleur de l’aviation a été élevé au jaune.

Le volcan Karymsky a fait une éruption modérée hier avec une émission d'un panache de cendre, selon les rapports des médias Russe. Le panache de cendre atteignit 7 km d’altitude (env. 22,000 ft).

Le volcan Kliuchevskoy montre une activité strombolienne régulière, avec des émissions de jets de lave incandescentes et des nuages de cendres atteignant plusieurs centaines de mètres, comme indiqué sur les photos récemment publiées sur le site Web KVERT.

The lava dome on Montserrat is again growing. The latest USGS/GVP activity report summarizes the recent activity: "MVO reported that pyroclastic flows from the Soufrière Hills lava dome occurred during 11-18 June. One of the largest pyroclastic flows traveled W down Gages Valley; others originated from within the collapse scar. A thermal camera showed several hot areas on the lava dome, likely exposed from rockfall and pyroclastic flow activity. On 28 June a small lahar descended the Belham Valley, to the NW. The Hazard Level remained at 3."

The remote Gaua volcano remains very active. Wellington VAAC monitors ash plumes often rising to 3 km (10,1000 ft) a.s.l.

Based on reports by the VAAC Darwin, Batu Tara volcano in the Sunda Sea continues to produce occasional ash eruptions reaching 2-3 km a.s.l.
