According to KVERT, the volcano emitted a dense ash plume that rose to around 4 km altitude and extended more than 60km north-east of the volcano, as well as a weaker plume that extended 140km north-east.
Visual observations indicate that the new activity originated at a vent at around 3km a.s.l. on the north-western flank of the volcano, from which a dark column rose about 200-300m. [moins]

Although working and living conditions in Goma are extremely difficult, to say the least, the scientist are still trying theri best to monitor both volcanoes. Head of the observatory, Kasereka Mahinda, is convinced that an eruption from Nyimuragira is going to happen soon - the volcano tends to erupt on average every 1-2 years and the last one was in late 2006, paired by increased seismicity. Also Nyiragongo volcano, which destroyed the centre of Goma in 2002 with a large flank eruption, is threatening to erupt. Mahinda points out that often both volcanoes are erupting at the same time. During the last visit of the scientists to Nyiragongo's crater in October a noticeable rise in the magma level of the lava lake was observed.
Much of the observatory's monitoring equipment has been looted, Mahinda explains, making more detailed analyses impossible, and there seems to be no way to reinstall. [moins]

Heavy rainfalls cause the Chaitén river and tributaries to transform into mud flows and overflow their natural and artificial banks. Water and mud have been destroying ever larger parts of Chaité city, which is now almost completely abandoned. [moins]

The newspaper La Patria reports that 20 families have decided to evacuate their homes. Geologist Carlos Eduardo Cardona from Ingeominas said in an interview that "something is happening" inside the volcano and that an eruption is expected in the near future.

Seismologists in Manizales from INGE measured strongly increased seismicity at depths of between 2 and 5km below and to the east of Machín's crater. The alert level of Machín was raised to 3 (orange, out of 4). [moins]

Between 7 and 9 November, Ingeominas recorded more than 3000 seismic events under the volcano and an overflight showed new fumaroles and increased degassing.
Civil protection estimates that more than 1000 families living in the valleys of the rivers Símbola and Páez, considered to be the highest risk zones due to the hazard of meltwater floods triggered by an eruption. A catastrophic meltwater flood from an eruption of Nevado del Ruiz volcano tragically took the lives of 25,000 people in 1985. [moins]

An abnormal heat source covering an area of more than 300 square kilometers, possibly due to extremely wide-spread lava flows, was detected by MODIS.
Not much more details about the eruption and its effects on the very scarsely populated Afar area are available at present. [moins]

The eruption first manifested itself as a large sulfur dioxide (SO2) cloud drifting eastwards over the Arabian peninsula, detected by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS). MODIS data from the University of Hawaii's MODVOLC hot-spot monitoring tool (http://modis.higp.hawaii.edu) confirmed an extensive hot-spot (presumably lava flows) near Alu volcano, in the northern part of the Erta 'Ale range.
