A phreatic explosion occurred at Sileri crater on 27 September 2009. The explosion was preceded by several earthquakes in the perios of 1-23 September, 4 deep and 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes. On 26 Sep, a thunderous noise was suddenly heard from Dieng up to 2 km away. On 27 Sep, a second(?) eruption happened. The eruptions ejected mud as far away as 140 m and left a deposit of 10 cm thickness near the vent. No unusual concentrations of poisonous gasses in the erea were detected.
The alert level at the volcano remains at level I (normal). However, people are advised to stay at least 500 m away from Sileri, Sinila, Timbang, Siglagah and Sikidang craters.

After three days of heavy rain, one or more landslides were triggered at Sibanteng crater on 15 January 2009. The debris covered the crater floor and sealed the vent. On 16 January, at 08h30, a sudden small phreatic eruption took place excavating a small crater 50 m in diameter. The alert at Dieng volcano was raised from level I to level II (out of 4).
