Une expédition en plein cœur de la jungle d’une semaine à un village, où les autochtones de la tribu momifient leurs ancêtres. Une semaine explorant le volcan actif Tavurvur dans la caldeira Rabaul et ces environnements.
Introduction:First of all, we’d like to emphasize that this is an expedition. Papua New Guinea is not an easy country to travel to- either very, very expensive or simply not possible. « Expect the unexpected » is the slogan of Papua New Guinea. Therefore, be prepared that this is not a commercially organized travel, but a real adventure:

J 1:
Flight from Port Moresby to Rabaul
The program stats with your arrival in Port Moresby, the latest at 1 pm. Domestic flight departs at 3pm. Snorkel or relax at the beach in front of our guest house in Kokopo and enjoy the sunset. H: Guesthouse with hot shower and power on the beach (D)
J 2:
Rabaul
The day starts early at the beach to witness the arrival of the Dukduk and Tumbuan spirit figures dancing in their Canoes, with a spectacular background of the active volcano. The entire day will be spent at the showgrounds, inmidst colorful dressed people. Great opportunity for photographs and for a small photoworkshop- how to take the best images in high contrasted light, how to show movement, and how to use fill-in flash. Evening: Introduction to Volcanology and introduction of East New Britain province, formerly a German colony, with its Tolai and Baining tribes. We will meet our Tolei friend, who will stay with us for the entire week. H: guesthouse with hot water shower and power (B, L, D)
J 3:
Rabaul and Tavurvur volcano
The morning can be spent at the festival again with visit of the colourful local market, or at the beach with the opportunity to snorkel. After lunch, we drive to Vulcan, a volcano, which has destroyed in a twin eruption together with Tavurvur volcano the entire township of Rabaul in 1994. We continue to Tunnel Hill with scenic lookouts. We visit the Volcano Observatory and meet the vulcanologists who will inform us about the volcanic activity and about the volcanoes of Papua New Guinea. J 4:
Rabaul and Tavurvur volcano
The entire day, we stay close to the volcano to see hopefully spectacular eruptions. The morning is spend with our Tolai hosts, to experience their way of life next to the active volcano. We visit the local school, where people suffer the most under the impact of the ashes. We’ll learn about their problems and hear some songs. After lunch, we see the spectacular hot springs with its mineral deposits at the foot of the volcano. Depending on the conditions, we might be able to hike up to the top. After 2 hours , we’ ll reach the summit, and will hopefully get a clear crater at sunset. We wait for the night to observe the red glow. If the volcano is too active, we’ll explore its base with an uplifted coral reef and a Japanese tunnel from WW2, including a gun. We’ll visit people digging for eggs: Birds lay their eggs in the volcanic sand and the heat incubates them. We wait for the night to come for spectacular pictures. J 5:
Rabaul and Tavurvur volcano
Visit of Rabaul Habour and the ruins of formerly one of the most beautiful cities in the South Pacific, including a plane wreck and a Japanese War Memorial, with a great look out. We will make Mumu, a local “earthoven” with volcanic rocks. You can learn how to weave baskets and mats out of Coconut leaves, how to open and grate coconut and how to make money! In East New Britain, shell money is still an accepted form of payment. H: tents near the volcano or guesthouse (B, L, D)
J 6:
Pidgen Island
Departure for our own deserted island. We only share it with hundreds of Fregatte birds at night, with hermit crabs, countless fish on the colourful and unspoilt fringing reef surrounding the island- including turtles! You might never have had a more beautiful spot to play soccer or to take a photo workshop. We’ll have plenty of time to do answer all your photo questions, take spectacular sunset pictures and do long-time exposures with the Southern Sky Stars. We’ll cook our dinner together on a fire- hopefully, with freshly caught fish. H: camp on the island (B, L, D)
J 7:
Flight to Lae
We have to say good-bye to our paradise and return to Kokopo early in the morning to catch the flight to Lae, where our second week of adventure awaits us. Travel by 4x4 car to a former gold-mining town (3 hrs ). Introduction talk about the Anga tribe, the custom of mummification and about Papua New Guinea. J 8:
Cold Mountain and mummies
Leaving the town (approx. 3 hrs on adventurous jungle roads) for « Cold mountain » with spectacular vegetation (tree ferns, pandanus palms, orchids) and small waterfalls. You can take a short hike if you wish. We’ll continue our way (approx. 2-3 hours on VERY adventurous roads) to our campsite for the night in a mountain village beneath the mummies gallery. J 9:
The Mummies
Scramble uphill through dense jungle to the mummy gallery (30min). We’ll meet the mummies and we’ll have plenty of time to photograph. Traditional war dance of the villagers upon return. After lunch, we continue our road (approx 1,5 hours) to a small settlement, where we’ll have our base camp in a house, built by a German missionary. H: house with mats and some beds (B, L, D)
J 10:
Gemtasu village & mummies
Preparations for 2 nights of camping and hiking. Some gear can be left in missionary house. Hike through coffee plantations, jungle and gardens to the village of Gemtasu (2hrs). Porters can be organised. You will meet the tribe and get to know our friends Gemtasu, Geamolio, Mosie, Yangdeng, Maremba, Gaius and the children. We will talk with the village chief about cultures and believes what happens after death. He might share with us that he wants to be mummified after his death. We’ll ask permission to access the mummy gallery, rarely seen by strangers. H: camp in mummy village (B, L, D)
J 11:
Mummy gallery
Visit of the astonishing mummy gallery (30min scramble uphill), where we meet Moymango, the mummified father of tribal leader Gemtasu. A tribal elder will introduce us to the ancestors. We have the opportunity to meet the spirits of the deceased, soak in the atmosphere and take many pictures. In the afternoon, we’ll join Assik for a jungle walk to a waterfall, where we’ll have the chance to swim in a spectacular setting. Assik shows us his gardens and explains the local way of life. Return to Lae
Return to Lae. Departure in the early morning, 4hrs drive to the mining town. Stop for lunch, and relax in a beautiful garden. Afternoon: Drive to Lae (3hrs) H: guest house in Lae with hot water shower and power (B, L, D)
