A recently published study shows that Mt Merapi volcano near Yogyakarta has been inflating during the past 2 years, following its last and deadly eruption in 2010. According to the study, Merapi has entered a new cycle of inflation which is a typical precursor of a new lava dome-building eruption caused by rising magma within the conduit of the volcano. At the moment, there is no way to predict when exactly the next eruption will start, but given that it is one of the world's most active volcanoes, it might not be in a too long future.

Un lahar puissant (débit de boue) a eu lieu le 21 mars, sur le flanc sud-ouest du volcan Merapi. Un lahar voyagé à travers le village de Sleman, à environ 20 km SO de Merapi, enterrant 21 foyers en plus de véhicules et de l'élevage. Au moins 200 résidents ont été évacués.

A small pyroclastic flow occured at Merapi yesterday, reaching 1.8 km from the summit. Today, the explosive activity from the vents at the summit seems to have decreased further. The ash plume rises to about 1 km above the crater and appears to be much smaller in volume than yesterday. Yogyakarta airport is scheduled to reopen on 16 Nov, if the trend of decreasing activity continues.

De très fortes éruptions continuent au volcan Mérapi, en Indonésie. Des violentes explosions sont audibles sur des dizaines de kilomètres à la ronde depuis le sommet. Le magma monte toujours à l'intérieur du volcan et des explosions encore plus puissantes pourraient arriver. La cendre des explosions et des coulées de pyroclastiques forme un grand panache atteignant l'altitude de 10-20 km et se prolongeant maintenant au-delà de 300 km à l'ouest. La cendre menace d'atteindre l'espace aérien de l'aéroport de Jakarta bientôt, ce qui a incité Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, des Emirats et d'autres compagnies aériennes à suspendre des vols long-courriers à destination de Jakarta pour l'instant. ...
