Darwin VAAC reported that ash-and-steam plumes from Pago rose to an altitude of 13.7 km (45,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 75 km NE.

People from villages near Pago reported a a single booming noise and viewed white vapor emissions on 27 August. Increased seismicity was observed during 27-28 August. Lava was thrown out of the second crater on 28 August and steam could be seen.
