Stéphanie from the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans in Clermont-Ferrand kindly sent us some photos showing the very first exciting moments of life of the new cone that has been growing in the latest eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Our colleague and friend Anthony Finizola is shown at work testing new fire-proof equipment in order to sample fresh lava from the ongoing eruption.
