A lahar descended the valley of the Nimá I river at 13:30 h local time yesterday, caused by heavy rainfalls mobilizing pyroclastic deposits. The mud flow was about 30 m wide, dense, hot and stinking of sulfur, and carried large boulders (up to 3 m across).

A moderate explosion occurred last night at 17:55 h (local time) erupting an ash plume rising 600 m and drifting SW and causing light ash fall in Finca La Florida and Parcelamiento Monte Claro. Otherwise, the dome is degassing and a few weak avalanches occurred from the lava flow on the southern flank of the dome.

Only relatively few and weak explosions occurred recently, some of which caused light ash fall in nearby areas. The lava dome is producing a degassing plume most of the time. No reports of activity at the stagnant lava flows.

Explosions of moderate size have been observed producing ash plumes reaching up to 900 m height, and causing light ash fall in the areas of Finca El Rosario and near San Marcos Palajunoj. Strong degassing noises were sometimes heard and some avalanches occurred from the flows on the NE and S sides of the active lava dome.

INSIVUMEH reports weak to moderate explosions producing dense gray ash plumes rising to up to 1 km above the lava dome and drifting west for more than 10 km. The lava flows have picked up activity as well and advanced within the gullies of Nima Nima I and II.

No significant changes occurred. Explosions of small and moderate size up to about 1 km height continue frequently and produce an ash plume drifting 15 km to the East and Northeast. Ash fall occurred in some parts of the city of Quetzaltenango where also faint odor of sulfur was noted. The lava flows on the sides of the dome remain active as well.

The rate of explosions seems to have increased,- INSIVUMEH mentions "abundant" small and moderate explosions with ash plumes rising up to about 1 km above the dome and drifting 13 km to the west. Effusive activity continues as well, with moderate near constant block avalanches from the several active flows on the dome's flanks.

The dome has been becoming more active, INSIVUMEH details in its latest report. 40-60 small to moderate explosions have been occurring daily, producing a fine ash plume rising about 500-1000 m above the dome. 4 lava flows are active on the flanks of the dome, and produce near-constant avalanches and sometimes small pyroclastic flows.
