Sierra Nevada is a volcanic complex on the Chile/ Argentina border in one of the remotest parts of the Central Andes. The volcano covers 225 km2 contains at least 12 volcanic vents, craters with up to 400 m diameter and large andesitic lava flows which reached 7 km distance.
The oldest part of the volcano lies on the Argentina side and inlcudes 2 stratovolcanoes, one of which has a 1 km summit crater. The youngest lavas of the volcano are probably less than 10,000 years old and located to the west in Chile.
