IG reported a decrease in activity from Tungurahua during 4-10 January. On 4 January steam plumes rose as high as 500 m above the crater and drifted W. Additional steam plumes observed on 8 January also drifted W. (USGS / Smithsonian Weekly Activity report 3-10 Jan 2012)

Tungurahua volcano's activity has calmed down. Since 9 December, its activity has consisted only of steaming. No larger explosions or pyroclastic flows have been observed, the Ecuadorian Geohpysical Institute reports in its latest bulletin. Gas measurements show a significant decrease in SO2 emission and deformation shows no indication of new magma rising in the conduit.
