The Observatory Simológico Volcano of Costa Rica (OVSICORI-UNA) confirmed that a new ash eruption occurred at Turrialba volcano in the afternoon around 15h20 on 12 Jan.
The eruption was first noticed by park rangers and local residents.
During the previous day, numerous rumblings could be heard from the mountain. According to OVSICORI-UNA, the eruption started between 3:10 and 3:20 pm and produced an ash plume from a vent on the southeast flank of the main crater in an area known as "La Quemada".
The ash reached a height of approx. 500 m above the crater rim, and was transported to the N-NW Direction by prevailing winds at an altitude at around 4 km.

The volcanic unrest at Turrialba seems to intensify, and signs of a possible new eruption in the near to medium future are getting stronger: According to OVSICORI-UNA a gas-and-steam plume from Turrialba rose to an altitude greater than 5.3 km (17,400 ft) a.s.l. on 5 December. Fieldwork confirmed an unusual output of gas from several fumaroles along the S outer wall. Areas burned by acute acidification have extended in the last month. Pastures turned yellowish near the upper areas, and native and exotic tree species were impacted as well as birch tree patches along most drainages. Within the W crater, temperatures of fumaroles reached 280 degrees Celsius and native sulfur was present. ... [details]
