Volcanic activity world-wide 31 July 2012: updates for Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Pacaya, Nevado del Ruiz, Sangay, Reventador, Tungurahuamardi juil. 31, 2012 12:08 | AUTEUR : T
Fuego volcano (Guatemala): Latest observations suggest a decreasing trend in activity, but strombolian eruptions continue with explosions producing 200-500 m high ash clouds, and at least one lava flow is still active. Seismic activity is at moderate levels. Pacaya (Guatemala): Volcanic seismic activity above background levels is visible on the PCG station. It includes tremor and shallow volcano-tectonic earthquakes. Santiaguito / Santa Maria (Guatemala): Santiaguito's activity continues at elevated levels. During 29-30 July, INSIVUMEH reports weak to moderately strong explosions that produced ash columns reaching 1,500 meters height and moving west southwest for 12 km. At night the sounds of pyroclastic flows could be heard. White steam plumes rise from the lava dome to 400 m height. Popocatépetl (Mexico): Exhalations of gas and ash have dropped to 1-2 per hour (versus 3-4 times per hour during heightened activity). Seismic activity is low. A small 1.8 volcanic earthquakes occurred at 11:36 local time on 30 July. Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): At 20:02 (Local time) on 30 July, the Manizales oservatory observed a seismic signal probably reflecting an ash eruption from Nevado del Ruiz. The signal was similar to those recorded on 10 and 19 April and 22 May 2012 when ash eruptions occurred. Seismic activity at Nevado del Ruiz is elevated and the volcano is producing an important SO2 plume. The other Colombian volcanoes currently on yellow alert by INGEOMINAS, Cerro Machín, Nevado del Huila, Galeras, Cumbal and Machín have been relatively quiet the past days. Seismic data suggest a phase of increased activity occurred at Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador on 29 July, but there are no recent reports of new ash emissions. At the moment, the seismicity is rather calm. A pilot observed a small ash eruption from the remote Sangay volcano on 28 July. A thermal signal at the summit is visible, suggesting lava dome growth and or strombolian activity.
