Raoul volcano (New Zealand) - eruption news: phreatic eruption, possibly one man killed in the crater

vendredi mars 17, 2006 10:29 | AUTEUR : TOM PFEIFFER

The Green Lake crater of Raoul volcano on Raoul Island (one of the remote Kermadecs Islands group in the South Pacific, located 625 miles northeast of New Zealand's city of Auckland) erupted early Friday, 17 March 2005. The eruption lasted about 30 minutes and was probably a series of phreatic explosions, throwing debris, ash and vapour out of the lake-filled crater.

The activity had been preceded by earthquakes since Sunday. The island is near uninhabited, but scientists and personell from the Conservation Department are being evacuated as news reports. One staff member is reported missing, possibly killed by the eruption while on a routine mission to check the lake's temperature when the eruption occurred.

Raoul has had 14 known eruptions, the last one in 1964.

Due to lack of participants, we decided to cancel the tour to North Sulawesi and postpone it to 2007. As an interesting alternative, we can offer a special trekking tour in Java and Bali from 5-20 August instead. There are two open spaces available.
