Cleveland volcano (Aleutian Islands, Alaska): explosive eruption on 19 June sends ash to 35,000 ft

jeudi juin 21, 2012 02:17 | AUTEUR : T

Cleveland volcano in the Aleutian Islands (Alaska) had an explosive eruption at 14.05 local time on 19 June, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) reported, who raised the alert status to Orange (3 out of 4). Based on pilots' observations, an ash plume rose to about 35,000 ft (10,6 km). As the eruptions blog writes, a possible explanation could be that the eruption was caused by a collapse of the lava dome, but Cleveland's remote location makes it difficult to confirm this.
Interestingly, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake at 14 km depth occurred in the Aleutians 1200 km to the west from Cleveland 6 hours earlier, but this might be simple coincidence.

Fossil tree at the petrified forest of Sigri
lundi, juin 18, 2012
New discoveries of petrified trees at the area of Agia Paraskevi show that there has been a dense forest 17 Million years ago on the western part of the island of Lesbos. New excavations under the palaeontologist Prof. Nikos Sourou show about 45 species of trees. Some even in the original position with their roots. In future it is planned to include the new items in the geopark of Lesbos island. The fossils are covered by many meters of pyroclastic material of huge volcanic eruptions that took place in the time around 15-23 Million years. Some of the volcanoes that caused this wonder of nature can be found even today after millions of years of erosion (caldera of Agra, Lepetimnos volcano and other lava domes). ... [details]
