Vatnafjöll volcanThe Vatnafjöll volcanic system, lying immediately SE of Hekla volcano, is a 40-km-long, 9-km-wide collection of alkali basaltic fissures and crater rows.
Introduction:Volcanism has migrated from the SW to the NE during the early to late Holocene. This volcanic system has been one of Iceland's most active. More than two dozen fissure eruptions have occurred during the Holocene, most recently about 1200 years ago.
