1965 landslide and tsunami
A non-eruptive volcanic landslide in 1965 produced a debris flow that reached Lake Cabrera, causing a tsunami that destroyed a settlement and caused 27 fatalities.
[cacher] On 19 February 1965 ca. 6-10 million cubic meters of of rock and ice detached from 200 m elevation on the the SW flank near the summit and produced a debris avalanche flow, which traveled 7.5 km and descended to an altitude of 1490 m, where it entered Lago Cabrera.
The velocity of the flow reached 40 m/s. A 25 m high tsunami was generated on the western end of the lake, destroying a settlement, and causing 27 fatalities. Debris flows similar to the 1965 event are likely to recur at Yate every 100 years. Global warming may result in an increased rate of avalanches due to glacial melting.
