La Cumbre volcano on Fernandia Island, in the Galapagos Islands, erupted on May 13, with a steam and ash cloud up to 7 km high. Lava flows are travelling down the volcanoe's SW flank and some of them have reached the sea.
La Cumbre volcano, a 1483 m high shieldvolcano, last erupted in 1994 and is the most active of the Galapagos hot spot volcanoes. The eruption caused no significant damage of live or property on the uninhabited and protected island of Fernandia.
