Nevado del Tolima volcano is an active stratovolcano in NW Colombia. At present, there is only fumarolic activity, but Tolima is one of Colombia's more active volcanoes with frequent explosive eruptions during the past 10,000 years.

The steep sided glacier-covered summit contains a 200-300 m deep crater and consists of lava domes and thick block-lava flows on the northern and eastern flanks.

The last major eruption, a Plinian type eruption, occurred 3600 years ago, and smaller eruptions occurred in the past centuries.

The andesitic-dacitic younger Tolima volcano formed during the past 40,000 years, rising above and largely filling a 3-km-wide older caldera.
